The State University of New York at New Paltz men's lacrosse team is back on the road Wednesday, traveling to Purchase, NY to take on the hosting Panthers for a 7 p.m. match up.
The Hawks (2-1 overall) are coming off a tough overtime loss at home against Bard College Saturday. The team worked back from an early 5-1 deficit against the Raptors, who played the majority of the game with just 14 men.
Thomas Armetta was the catalyst for SUNY New Paltz, scoring five goals in the game to help in the rally. The Hawks tied the score three times in the fourth quarter before taking their first lead with 3:19 left off a goal from Armetta. Bard was quick to respond, however, and knotted up the game once again to force extra time. As regulation expired,
Ryan Scully was hit with a major penalty, which gave the Raptors a man-up advantage to start overtime. The visitors took advantage and scored 30 seconds into the first overtime period to claim a 12-11 win.
Nate Lindsey earned his first collegiate start for SUNY New Paltz and had a solid outing, totaling 18 saves. Defensively,
Joseph Bradbury led the Hawks with two caused turnovers and three ground balls with
Zach Schmidt also picking up five ground balls to go along with one goal on the day.
Armetta and Scully head into Wednesday's game pacing the team offensively with 10 and 11 points, respectively. Aiden Gregory follows with four points on the year (one goal, three assists).
Purchase is coming off a season-opening win over Albertus Magnus College Feb. 28 and is seeing its first action in nearly two weeks. The Panthers earned a 7-6 overtime win with sophomore Connor Schwenker scoring the game-winner with a man-up advantage with about two minutes left in the first overtime.
Schwenker was assisted by Ben Erkan on the play, who leads the team with four points in their first game, scoring one goal and adding three helpers in the win. Dan Ohrem follows with three goals, while Schwenker totaled two goals.
