After a tough loss Tuesday against Stockton University, the State University of New York at New Paltz women's lacrosse team (2-2) will hit the road again Thursday, this time against Farmingdale State College (1-3).
The Hawks compete in their second away game Thursday hoping to find a victory after falling in their first. Against Stockton, SUNY New Paltz struggled offensively in the fan to capitalize and did not recover from the hefty lead the Ospreys gained in the second half. Despite their difficulties against Stockton though, the Hawks showed strength defensively and improved their play compared to the 2019 season where the Hawks fell to Stockton 4-15.
Freshman goalie
Julia Culhane made her second appearance of the season and played an entire 60 minutes. Culhane kept the Hawks in the game saving 12 goals with 28 shots on goal against. SUNY New Paltz faced an aggressive and quick attack and did well forcing Stockton attack out wide yet, strong defense was not enough for the Hawks to win the game.
Going into the competition against Farmingdale, SUNY New Paltz plans to use its previous loss as a learning experience and hopes to bring the energy to the field in their final match of the week.
Leading scorers for the Rams include freshman attack Emily Piciullo (12 goals, 1 assist) and senior attack Courtney Gendels (11 goals, 1 assist). Piciullo transferred to Farmingdale State from Jacksonville University after playing Division 1 lacrosse for two years. Gendels led the Rams in goals (61), points (76), shots (97) and was named First-Team All-Skyline in the 2019 season.
Though Farmingdale has earned only one victory this season, there is experienced talent on the team that is projected to challenge the Hawks, specifically on the defensive end. This season, SUNY New Paltz has outperformed the Rams in certain areas of play statistically such as scoring more points (51 compared to 41), and drawing more caused turnovers (70 compared to 41) but numbers aside, the final score will be determined by the performance of both teams on game day.
SUNY New Paltz will take on the Rams Thursday at 1 p.m. in Farmingdale, NY.
