Farmingdale, NY — Following an incredible comeback in the second half of the game, the State University of New York (SUNY) at New Paltz women's lacrosse team fell to Farmingdale State College by a close margin of 14-13.
The early minutes of the game were slow for the Hawks who struggled finding their rhythm offensively. Both teams alternated possession frequently until 23 minutes into the game when the Rams got on the board first with a goal from senior attack Courtney Gendels, her first of four goals in the game. SUNY New Paltz responded exactly one minute later with its opening score of the day by junior midfielder
Tara Bovich, the sole goal of the half for the Hawks.
Energy seemed evenly matched between the two teams in the first period. SUNY New Paltz and the Rams were 9-9 in caused turnovers and Farmingdale led by only one in draw controls (5-4). Yet, the Hawks struggled to keep possession of the ball and create in the fan. The Rams capitalized where SUNY New Paltz lacked and gained a six goal advantage before the end of the half.
Coming into the second half, the Hawks came out fired up with an incredible change in energy and speed. Hawks senior attacker
Jennifer O'Leary got the first draw control of the period giving her team possession. With an attacking mentality heading into the final period of the game, junior
Amy Hofer scored the first goal of the second half.
From that point on it was uphill for SUNY New Paltz. Bovich showed incredible strength throughout the whole game leading the team in shots (9) and goals (7). The Hawks' offense created plays in the attacking end and worked as a team to close the deficit. With just more than 10 and a half minutes left in the game, sophomore offensive midfielder
Maddy Carullo knotted the score, 10-10.
Following the tie, both teams went tit-for-tat in goals for the following four minutes until sophomore midfielder Kristen Shine got the two point lead for the Rams with less than four minutes in the game. SUNY New Paltz freshman midfielder
Shannon Brosnan put her first goal in of the game with less than two minutes left bringing the Hawks, 14-12 behind the Rams. With just more than 30 second left, Carullo put the ball in the back of the net and gave the Hawks their final goal of the game.
After losing the last draw control, SUNY New Paltz was unable to gain back possession and fell to the Rams, 14-13.
