Mahwah, NJ — The State University of New York at New Paltz men's volleyball team (14-3, 2-1 UVC) defeated Ramapo College (12-8) in three sets, 25-21, 25-19, 25-19 on Wednesday night.
The Hawks never looked in doubt to win the game, although the first set was close in the beginning. The score was tied at 11 and 12 apiece. Two aces in a row by sophomore
Connor MacPhail gave SUNY New Paltz a small lead, as the teams kept exchanging points. Senior middle blocker
Tevin Skeete brought the lead back to three again at 21-18, and sophomore
Dan LaRosa ended the set at 25-19 with a kill from senior setter
Matthew Grace.
In the second set the Hawks went on top early as
Brendan Spulnick and
Aaron Carrk fired at will. A service error by the Roadrunners, followed by a Grace ace, boosted SUNY New Paltz to a three-point run to earn a 20-15 advantage. Ramapo kept making mistakes, and a bad set and missed serve ended up gifting the Hawks the set, 25-19.
The third set was tied at 8-8 before a run by SUNY New Paltz. The Roadrunners stayed close, thanks to a service error and attack error by the visitors, and the teams kept handing each other points from behind the line, as the Hawks pushed up, 16-13. Grace fired in an ace late, and then assisted Carrk to finish off Ramapo, 25-19 and complete the sweep.
The Hawks had five aces on the night but collected 20 errors too, compared to Ramapo's 12, and hit a very high .393 percent offensively, while assisting on 41 of their 45 kills.
Carrk finished with a game-high 15 kills, while Spulnick tallied 11 kills on the night. SUNY New Paltz middle blockers Skeete and
John Ronan each had six kills.
SUNY New Paltz next play M.I.T. Friday at 7 p.m. in a United Volleyball Conference match.
