SUNY New Paltz Baseball Top-Five Career Home Run, Hits, Stolen Bases and Win Leaders

New Paltz, NY — The State University of New York at New Paltz took a look back at some of the best all-time statistical leaders in Hawks baseball history. See who owns the top spot in most career home runs, hits, stolen bases and wins, which date back to the mid 1970's. Photo gallery of all statistical leaders are also included below.
 

Top-5 Home Run Leaders:


Joe McGuire5) Joe McGuire (1998-2000)
Total: 10 HR

McGuire who also captained the Hawks during his time in the program was an infielder from Brentwood, NY out of Brentwood High School. He finished his career with 10 home runs for SUNY New Paltz, contributing big power numbers along with a few other teammates who are featured on this list during the 2000 season.


 

Brian Clarke4) Brian Clarke (2000-2001) and Joe DeRosa (1971-1974)
Total: 11 HR

Clarke played just two seasons for the Hawks, the 2000 and 2001 campaigns where the team went 42-31-2 with him on the team. Clarke was a third baseman for SUNY New Paltz out of Lower Sackville, Nova Scotia where he attended Lower Sackville High School. During the 2000 season, Clarke played in all 39 games and went 44-for-118 to bat .373 on the year with 16 doubles and 44 RBI — both of which led the team — to go along with six home runs on the year. During the 2001 season, Clarke batted .367 in 120 plate appearances with 18 doubles and five home runs.

DeRosa was a four-year member of the Hawks, playing on Loren Campbell Memorial Field before it was ever named after the legendary coach. DeRosa held the all-time home run record for almost 30 years before Vinnie Perry replaced his name on the list after the 2002 season.

 

Vinnie Perry baseball2) Vinnie Perry (1998-2002)
Total: 13

Perry was also a four-year letter winner for the Hawks baseball program, originally hailing from Kingston, NY where he attended Kingston High School, playing both first base and outfield for SUNY New Paltz. Perry hit an outstanding .438 with three home runs and 14 stolen bases during one of SUNY New Paltz's best seasons of all-time. Perry was also a prolific base stealer for the Hawks, as he swiped 44 over his career. Perry was named one of four captains during his senior campaign in 2002.

 

John Buonamono baseball1) John Buonamano (2000-02)
Total: 17

Buonamano was a three-year member of the Hawks, originally from Royersford, PA where he attended Spring-Ford High School. The outfielder played a big part in the Hawks 20-win 2000 season, as he batted .376 with five home runs. Buonamano finished the 2000 season with 58 hits, including nine doubles and 23 RBI.  Buonamano also went 3-2 on the mound, fancying a 3.51 ERA in 41 innings pitched in 2000. Buonamano, playing primarily at the designated hitter spot, went on to hit seven home runs the next season, getting 42 hits and batting .347 in the Hawks' 22-win 2001 season. Buonamano was named a captain his senior year in 2002.

Jake Williams baseball5) Jake Williams (2015-2018)
Total: 141

Williams was a four year letter winner at SUNY New Paltz, graduating from Seaford High School in 2014. A .307 career hitter and staple in the Hawks lineup during two playoff runs, the outfielder turned infielder also contributed to a 20-win season in 2016. He won Rookie of the Year in 2015, where he batted .299 with 29 hits. He was first-team all-conference his senior season in 2018, where he batted .343 with three home runs and had 35 hits. Williams is also the program's all-time triples leader with 11. Williams was named one of the captains in his 2018 senior season.

 

Josh Gutes baseball4) Josh Gutes (2003-2006) 
Total:145

Gutes was a four year member of the Hawks and also a captain, hailing from Hauppauge, NY graduating from Hauppauge High School in 2002. Gutes' best season came in his junior year in 2005 where he batted .377 with 49 hits. Gutes batted over .300 in three of his four seasons, and is also one of the best base runners in SUNY New Paltz history, seeing his name on this list once again in the stolen bases category. Gutes also had some appearances on the mound, going 1-0 with a 1.93 ERA in six appearances in 2004. In 2005 he boasted a 2-1 record with a 1.12 ERA and then went 1-1 with a 2.79 ERA in 2006. Gutes is second all-time in saves and is the single season leader with four saves in a season.
 

Tyler Terlecky baseball3) Tyler Terlecky (2006-2009)
Total: 146

Terlecky was a four year member of the Hawks squad and a captain in 2009. He resides from Binghamton, NY and graduated from Binghamton High School in 2005. Terlecky, who was also featured on SUNY New Paltz's Alumni Wall of Distinction in 2017, burst onto the scene his sophomore year, when he batted .327 with 32 hits. Terlecky followed up in his junior season with 55 hits and batting .379 with one home run. Terlecky ended his senior season with a career best .380 batting average, while slugging two home runs and 52 hits.


Jeff Cote baseball2) Jeff Coté (2003-2006)
Total: 150

Coté was a four year member of the Hawks baseball team and was one of the team captains in 2006. Coté is from Mechanicsville, Maryland and graduated from Chopticon. His school record batting average of .475 (38 hits in 80 at-bats) in the 2004 season still stands. Coté followed the next season with a .333 batting average and had 46 hits. His senior season he had 53 hits and a .363 batting average

 

John DeKams1) John DeKams (2004-2007)
Total: 210

DeKams was a four year member of the New Paltz baseball team and was a captain his last two seasons. From Kings Park, NY, he graduated from Kings Park High School in 2003. DeKams started his career on a good note, getting 50 hits and sporting a .388 batting average, and he followed up the next year by batting .397 with 52 hits. DeKams' was one hit shy of tying the SUNY New Paltz hit record in 2006, finishing with a .418 batting average, while hitting one home run and 59 hits (Bill Kelts hit 60 that season). DeKams finished his senior season with 49 hits (his only season not getting 50 hits or more), batting .398 with one home run and 33 RBI.

Josh Gutes baseball5) Josh Gutes (2003-2006)
Total: 34

A team captain during his time with the Hawks, Gutes earned his name on the top-five list for the second time after collecting 34 stolen bases in 46 attempts over his career. 




 

Matt Carr baseball4) Matt Carr (2012-2013)
Total: 39

Carr played two seasons for the Hawks and was a solid lead-off hitter in the Hawks lineup. The Long Island Lutheran graduate captained the Hawks his senior season and batted .332 with 91 hits and two home runs over his two years in the New Paltz lineup. Carr stole 39 bases in 48 attempts over his career.

 

Vinnie Perry baseball3) Vinnie Perry (1998-2002)
Total: 44

Solidifying himself as one of the best four-year players in Hawks history, Perry, who helped captain the team in 2002, lands third all-time in stolen bases after stealing 44 bases in 58 attempts over his career. 



 

2) Jason Kiernan (1994-1995)
Total: 45

Kiernan played two seasons in a Hawks uniform and the Newburgh Free Academy soldified himself as a threat on the base paths. Kiernan batted .390 with 21 stolen bases (in 22 attempts) in his first season as a Hawk in 1994. Kiernan followed up with a .268 batting average and 24 stolen bases (in 27 attempts) in 1995. Kiernan stole 45 bases in 49 attempts over his career, sporting an outstanding .918 stolen base percentage.
 

Nick Diepietro baseball1) Nick Dipietro (2016-2018)
Total: 52

Dipietro played three seasons with the Hawks after transferring out of SUNY Cortland his sophomore fall. The Red Dragons lost out on one of the leagues top outfielders as Dipietro hit .342 with two home runs and had 16 stolen bases in his first year with SUNY New Paltz. The Carmel, NY native hit a career .275 with 96 hits and three home runs over his three seasons as a Hawk. Dipietro stole 52 bases in 69 attempts over his career to claim the program's all-time stolen base title after just three seasons. 
 

Top-5 Win Leaders:


Zach Potter and Jimmy Dononhue baseball5) Zach Potter (2007-2008) and Jimmy Donohue (2006-2009)
Total: 13

Potter, the Pine Plains graduate, pitched for the Hawks for two seasons and was named captain his senior year. Potter went 6-3 with eight complete games in his first year with the Hawks. He struck out 59 batters and sported a 3.32 ERA, while adding two hits in his first season. Potter followed up with a dominant 7-1 record with 87 strikeouts and a 2.30 ERA. Potters seven wins in 2008 is tied (Tom Whitaker, 1975) for the most in Hawks single-season history.

Donohue was a three year letter winner for the Hawks and graduated from Deer Park High School before attending SUNY New Paltz and was also named captain his senior season. The southpaw began his career going 4-2 with a 2.82 ERA and fanning 48 batters. Donohue was a relied on pitcher, while with the Hawks, as he found himself in the rotation each of his four years.
 

Chris Chismar baseball3) Chris Chismar (2010-2013)
Total: 14

Chismar was a four year letter winner for the SUNY New Paltz baseball team after graduating from Lindenhurst High School in 2009. Chismar led the team in strikeouts his freshman season, with 70. He also went 2-1 on the year. Chismar followed up the next season with a 6-4 record, a 2.64 ERA and 78 punch outs. Chismar had a 1.84 ERA his junior season, despite only going 1-4 on the season. Overall, Chismar struck out 219 batters and owned a 2.50 ERA in 180 career innings pitched.


2) Eric Kantner (1999-2002)
Total: 16

Kantner was a four year letter winner for the Hawks baseball team and was a 1998 Goshen High School graduate. Kantner won five games for consecutive seasons in 2000 and 2001, which featured 20 and 22-win seasons as a team. Kantner sported a 3.75 ERA with three wins his senior year, which placed him as the program's all-time win leader until 2014 where he was replaced by Andrew Grann.

 

Andrew Grann baseball1) Andrew Grann (2011-2014)
Total: 17

Grann was a four year member of the SUNY New Paltz baseball team and was a graduate of Oceanside High School in 2009. Grann was a finalist for the Diamond Award, awarded to the best pitcher in Nassau county,  his senior year of high school. Grann also batted .310 (9-29) through his four years on the Hawks. Grann's best season was in 2012, where he went 6-3 and had a 2.97 ERA along with 47 strikeouts. Grann finished his illustrious career with the Hawks with an all-time 17 wins, sporting a 3.20 ERA and 200 strikeouts through 239.1 career innings. Grann also held opposing batters to a .240 batting average against and fired 13 career complete games. Grann finished his career with an At-Large All-SUNYAC selection at the end of his senior season.
