The State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) released its women's volleyball All-Decade list Tuesday with the Hawks having four of 19 selections named among the best who played in the conference.
Becca Borquist, Carrie Hack, Marissa King and Morgan Roessler all earned a spot on the SUNYAC All-Decade team, as the four were among some of the best to suit up for the Hawks women's volleyball program. The quartet starred on the same court during the 2013 season, which saw the team have its most historic regular season run, finishing 34-7 overall and making a run into the third round of the NCAA Tournament.
"Carrie, Marissa, Becca and Morgan were great volleyball players. Their drive and ultra-competitiveness made them elite, which is why they are among this prestigious All-Decade team," said SUNY New Paltz coach
Matt Giufre, who coached all four of his All-Decade selections through his 18-year tenure at the helm of the program.
"When you look at the history of the women's volleyball program, 2013 stands out. There is no secret why. It is the single season Carrie, Marissa, Becca, and Morgan were all teammates," Giufre added. "Thirty-four wins and an appearance in the NCAA Sweet 16. I can only imagine what they would have achieved if their ages allowed them to play together longer. The All-Decade team is a reflection of consistent high-level play. Individually, each was among the best in the SUNYAC for all four of their years. I am so pleased the SUNYAC recognized them as members of the elite All-Decade team."
To qualify for the SUNYAC All-Decade team student-athletes must have competed for a SUNYAC member school during the 2009-2019 fall seasons. The All-Decade team was voted on by Sports Information Directors from all 10 member institutions.
Grace Cergol of SUNY Geneseo was named Player of the Decade, while The College of Brockport coach Steve Pike was named as the SUNYAC Coach of the Decade. To view the full list of the SUNYAC All-Decade selections,

Becca Borquist (2012-2015)
Outside Hitter
Rhinebeck, NY/Rhinebeck High School
Borquist is one of the most decorated athletes in program history. She was a part of three 30-plus win seasons during her time as a Hawk and finished her career by helping SUNY New Paltz to 121 wins and just 33 losses, which included a SUNYAC Championship and three trips to the NCAA Tournament.
Borquist made an immediate impact on the team, finishing her freshman season with 399 kills, 481.5 points, while averaging 2.71 kills per set — all second most on the team — to go along with 54 aces, 496 digs and 49 blocks en route to helping the team to a conference semifinal appearance and a trip into the NCAA Regional Final. Borquist earned SUNYAC East Rookie of the Year honors following her stellar first season and was placed on the All-SUNYAC East Second-Team, along with making the All-SUNYAC Academic Team.
"I had the opportunity to coach Becca during her high school senior club season, so I thought I had a pretty good idea what to expect, and her work ethic and drive still blew me away," Giufre said. "As a freshman, Becca established herself as one of the best players in the SUNYAC, and only got better from there. She's one of the most complete players I've ever coached and was still never satisfied. She's in the top five of all statistical categories related to her position, offensively and defensively. Becca impacted the game in so many ways, and rarely fell short as our primary go-to player. Even though other teams created game plans specifically to slow her down, Becca found ways to beat them."
The Rhinebeck, NY native built off her standout freshman season and upped her sophomore totals to a career-best 510 kills, becoming the first Hawk and only since 1999 to surpass the 500-kill total in a single season. She paced the team with 599 points, while also totaling 65 aces, 456 digs and 43 blocks. Borquist finished the season ranking 11th in the country in total kills and fourth in total attacks, and was named to her first All-SUNYAC First-Team and earned a spot on the ECAC Metro/Upstate First Team and AVCA All-America honorable mention.
During the NCAA Tournament, Borquist totaled 28 kills, eight aces and 32 digs, and was named to the NCAA DII Clarkson Regional All-Tournament team due to her efforts. She added academic honors to her long list of athletic accolades as well, being named to the CoSida/Capital One Academic All-District Team and SUNYAC Commissioner's List.
The following season, Borquist was named as the SUNYAC Player of the Year and earned her second-consecutive trip to the All-SUNYAC First-Team, while also being named AVCA All-New York Region First Team and an AVCA All-America Third Team selection. She finished second in the SUNYAC that season in kills per set (3.62) and was 27th in the nation in total kills (462). Borquist continued her prowess in the classroom as well, named to the CoSida Academic All-District Team, along to the CoSida Academic All-America Third Team and to the SUNYAC Commissioner's List.
As a senior, Borquist was named as a SUNYAC Co-Player of the Year and again made her third trip to the All-SUNYAC First Team. She earned AVCA All-New York Region First-Team and AVCA All-America honorable mention honors to go along with CoSida Academic All-District First Team, CoSida Academic All-America Third Team and SUNYAC Commissioner's List recognition.
For Borquist's career, the 5-foot, 10-inch outside has totaled 1,744 kills, 200 aces and 1,647 digs, ranking second, fifth an fourth, respectively, in Hawks program history.
Carrie Hack (2010-2013)
Libero
Baldwinsville, NY/C.W. Baker High School
Carrie Hack and Marissa King were two of the best to ever play for Giufre's program, as the 2014 alumnae have set numerous Hawk records during their four seasons with the team at libero and setter, respectively, and again their legacies are intertwined once again as both were rightfully named to the SUNYAC All-Decade team.
"Carrie and Marissa are forever tied together," Giufre said. "They came in as highly touted freshmen and didn't disappoint. They were great players, great students, great leaders, and tough competitors expecting the best of themselves and those around them."
Hack is the only Hawk to ever surpass 2,000 career digs and she holds the record by a hefty margin with 2,437, 489 more than Katy Herbst, who sits behind her with 1,948. Hack was named to the All-SUNYAC team all four seasons she starred for the orange and blue. Her freshman campaign in 2010 Hack paced SUNY New Paltz with 567 digs, averaging 4.64 digs per set, including a season-high 30 digs in a five-set win over Fredonia, while also contributing 30 aces on the year. Hack was named SUNYAC East Rookie of the Year, All-SUNYAC East First-Team and AVCA All-New York Region honorable mention.
The Baldwinsville, NY native led the SUNYAC in digs as a sophomore in 2011, finishing with 590 and averaging 4.8 digs per set while earning All-SUNYAC East Second Team honors and on the All-SUNYAC Tournament team after helping the Hawks to a finals appearance in the conference tournament.
As a junior, Hack helped guide the Hawks to their first NCAA Regional appearance with the team defeating Skidmore College, then knocking off No. 17 SUNY Cortland before battling hosting Clarkson in the regional championship in a five-set defeat.
Hack posted 40 digs and four aces through the NCAA Tournament — including 27 digs in the regional final against the Golden Knights — while finishing the season with a career best 769 digs, the most in program history since 1997 and third most in Hawks single season history. The team's success also brought a myriad of individual accolades for Hack, who was named once again to the All-SUNYAC East First Team, AVCA All-New York Region First Team and an AVCA All-America honorable mention.
Hack and the Hawks posted its second-straight 30-win season in 2013 and made another run in the NCAA Tournament, again making the regional final after defeating Colby-Sawyer College and Stockton in the first two rounds before falling to No. 22 Clarkson. Despite missing a portion of the season due to injury, Hack still paced the SUNYAC once again in digs with 511, averaging nearly five digs per set, and added 45 aces on the year. She landed a spot on the All-SUNYAC Second Team and the All-SUNYAC Tournament team with SUNY New Paltz making an appearance in the SUNYAC Championship game.
Along with being the program leading in digs, Hack ranks ninth all-time in program history with 178 aces.
"Carrie was an elite defender who still holds the record for career digs. Teams would purposely serve and hit away from her, yet at the end of the match she filled the box score with totals contributing to many wins," Giufre said. "A serious injury sidelined her for a good part of her senior year, and once she came back, it was like she was never gone. She set a standard for all liberos."
Marissa King (2010-2013)
Setter
Canandaigua, NY/Canandaigua Academy
Like her classmate Carrie Hack, King came in as a freshman during the 2010 campaign and through her four years established herself as not only one of the best to ever play for the Hawks, but arguably
the best at her respective position. King made the All-SUNYAC team every season, including First-Team as a junior and senior, along with being a two-time AVCA All-America honorable mention and held SUNY New Paltz's all-time assist record until Maddie Zwickl surpassed that mark in 2018.
"Marissa graduated as our all-time assists leader from the setter position. She also set a standard for future setters that's hard to reach," Giufre said. "As a setter, Marissa used a combination of great athleticism and intelligence to make life easier on our hitters — the true mark of an elite setter. Marissa made any rally winnable for us. She also dealt with serious illness and injury in the last weeks of the season but was able to battle through and not miss a practice or a match. Her teammates were inspired by her tough, selfless attitude and rallied around her."
An All-SUNYAC East Second Team selection as a freshman, King became the team's primary setter and paced the team with 611 assists on the year, averaging just more than five per set, while also contributing 57 aces on the year. With the Hawks making a run at a SUNYAC Championship the following season, King finished third in all of the SUNYAC with 937 assists and was named All-SUNYAC East Second Team for the second-straight season.
In a historic 2012 season, King was the catalyst. She was only one of two Hawks to play all 155 sets and set a program record for single-season assists with 1,622 on the year, while adding 61 aces, second most on the team only behind Hack, to go along with 377 digs and 33 blocks. King helped lead the Hawks to their first NCAA regional and during the NCAA Tournament totaled 126 assists in the three matches played. She was awarded team MVP following the season and was also named All-SUNYAC East First Team, AVCA All-New York Region First Team and AVCA All-America honorable mention, along with earning a place on the SUNYAC Commissioner's List.
Despite fighting Carpal Tunnel Syndrome in both hands throughout her senior year, a tough battle to face for any athlete but particularly for a setter,
King overcame the devastating pain and persevered to lead SUNY New Paltz to another NCAA Regional Final run with historic individual statistical numbers to boot, while not missing a single match.
Although King didn't break her own single-season assist record as a senior in 2013, she came close and still had the second-most single season assists in program history with 1,469. The Canandaigua, NY native was awarded a spot on the All-SUNYAC First-Team, SUNYAC Tournament Team, ECAC Metro/Upstate First Team, AVCA All-America Honorable Mention, team MVP, made the NCAA DIII Clarkson Regional All-Tournament Team, was a CoSida/Capital One Academic All-District Team and named the SUNY New Paltz Carol Eckman Award recipient for the top female student-athlete.
Along with ranking second all-time in career assists, King also is second in program history in aces with 229 and tied the four-set single match record with 60 assists and second in three-set single match aces with nine twice.
Morgan Roessler (2013-2016)
Outside Hitter
Massapequa, NY/Massapequa High School
A superior two-sport athlete for the Hawks, starring on both the SUNY New Paltz women's volleyball and basketball programs, Roessler was a dynamic outside hitter who racked up 1,266 career kills and 410 total blocks in her career for Giufre's program, while helping the team to four-straight SUNYAC Championship finals appearances with a SUNYAC title in 2014 and two trips to the NCAA Tournament.
"Morgan came to New Paltz as a relatively new volleyball player with tremendous potential," Giufre said. "In those situations, athletes achieve or don't based on how committed they are to finding the best in themselves. Right away, Morgan's actions showed she was one who was going to fight to be among the greatest. Early in her career, Morgan physically overpowered many opponents. Through experience, as she learned to see and feel the game, she dominated them. Morgan had an innate ability to block, out score and crowd distractions, and lock in on the job that needed to be done. No matter what opponents tried to do, she willed herself to beat them. On game day, Morgan refused to lose. She took that pride into practice and trained in a manner that deserves to be successful."
After totaling 297 kills as a freshman and landing second in the SUNYAC in hitting percentage (.317) and blocks per set (.96), while ranking 42nd in the country with 128 total blocks, Roessler was named SUNYAC Rookie of the Year and All-SUNYAC Second Team. She totaled 47 kills in the postseason, including eight with three blocks in the regional final game against Clarkson.
The following season, the Massapequa, NY native helped the Hawks back into the postseason, this time to claim the program's second SUNYAC Championship title and make a trip to the NCAA quarterfinals. She posted 28 kills and 10 blocks during the postseason, including seven kills, four blocks and hitting .500 in the three-set victory over Fredonia State in the conference finals. Roessler ultimately finished her sophomore campaign with 254 kills, second most to just Borquist, and team-most 79 blocks en route to being named to the All-SUNYAC Second Team.
Roessler notched her first of two-straight All-SUNYAC First Team and AVCA All-America honorable mention awards in 2015, while also making her first trip to the All-SUNYAC First Team. She was named team MVP after helping to pace SUNY New Paltz offensively with 306 kills, second most only to Borquist, a team-best 106 blocks, eighth most in single season program history, while hitting an impressive .296 on the year.
She finished her Hawks career with her most productive statistical season in 2016. Roessler led the SUNYAC in kills per set, was second in total kills, fourth in blocks per set and third in total blocks. Her 409 kills was a career-best, while also adding a team-most 87 blocks and 47 aces, and hitting .286 on the season. Roessler helped her team to a SUNYAC finals appearance and was named to the SUNYAC All-Tournament team after recording 32 kills, 11 digs, five aces and 12 blocks in the team's three playoff matches.
Along with collecting her second-straight All-SUNYAC First Team recognition, she was voted as the SUNYAC Player of the Year, becoming the fifth Hawk in program history to take home the honor. To pile onto her accolades that fall, she earned a spot on the AVCA New York Region First Team and again was named as an AVCA All-America honorable mention. Additionally, after also helping the women's basketball program to a SUNYAC title that winter she was named as the SUNY New Paltz Carol Eckman Award recipient for top female athlete.
Roessler ended her SUNY New Paltz career with 1,266 kills — fifth-most all time — while ranking eighth in program history in career hitting percentage (.298), fourth in solo blocks (159), first in assist blocks (251) and second in total blocks (410).
