SUNY New Paltz Women's Soccer Falls 2-0 on the Road to Vassar College

Poughkeepsie, NY — The State University of New York at New Paltz women's soccer team traveled across the river to take on non-conference foe Vassar College Wednesday afternoon.

The Hawks (4-5-1 overall, 2-2 SUNYAC) entered the game winning two in a row but couldn't extend their streak against the Brewers and suffered a 2-0 loss on the road.

The game, originally scheduled as SUNY New Paltz's home opener Sept. 1, was postponed to Wednesday against Vassar, which entered the game at 5-3-1 before the win. The Brewers held the advantage in shots (20-5) and shots on goal (9-2), while also creating more corner kick opportunities (5-2) in the victory.

Justine Tapert gave the hosts the one-goal advantage in the 22nd minute, registering her first of the year. Off an initial stop by the Hawks' Kyra Russo, the Brewers earned their second corner of the match, taken by Tapert. After playing in the ball, Tapert got in on the play and managed to find the back of the net to get her team on the board early.

Vassar took a slight, 1-0 cushion at the half, but quickly doubled its advantage just seven minutes into the following 45 minutes. Keeping possession on their offensive third, the Brewers capitalized with a goal by London Wilkes off an assist by Ariana Pjetri.

The Hawks created a few chances to dig into the hole, including an attempt by Cailin Ruoti that was saved by Vassar's Claire Mackenzie in the 60th minute and a shot just wide by Lisette Palomo off a corner taken by Emma Voege two minutes later, but SUNY New Paltz couldn't break through for the score. Alexis DeLeo tested Mackenzie five minutes later, but the keeper made the stop. The Hawks' final scoring chance came late in the 88th minute after earning its second corner of the game. Sky Pedroza played the ensuing ball in, but the Brewers managed to clear without any threat on net.

Ruoti led SUNY New Paltz with two shots, one on goal, while Ally Donovan, Palomo and DeLeo each had one. DeLeo played a career-high 90 minutes. Russo, the only other Hawk to play the full match, finished with seven saves.

SUNY New Paltz is back in action Saturday when it hosts Catskill Cup rival SUNY Oneonta on the South Turf Field at 1 p.m.
