Oneonta, NY — The State University of New York at New Paltz women's tennis team came away with a hard-fought 8-1 win on the road against SUNY Oneonta Friday.
The Hawks (3-0 overall, 3-0 SUNYAC) came off a commanding 9-0 sweeps to start the season over Cortland and Plattsburgh and opened their first road match Friday against the Red Dragons (1-1, 1-1) for a re-match of their 2019 championship. Despite the 8-1 score, the outing was tight throughout doubles and singles play.
"This was a really tough match," said SUNY New Paltz coach
Rob Bruley. "The score of 8-1 doesn't reflect how close the match really was with all double matches running close and two singles matches going to tie breakers. I was pleased how strong doubles were and a great performance from freshman
Tatiana Barnett."
Trinity Chow and
Laura Koob played at first doubles and muscled to an 8-5 win over Oneonta's Mya Lipscomb and Sophia Schutte.
Alexandra Dratch and
Onalee Batcheller defeated Olivia Fraser and Rebecca Macdonald in second doubles, 8-6 and
Jenna Grandville and
Loretta Donovan won at third doubles, 8-4.
Chow took her first ever loss to a SUNYAC opponent Friday, falling at first singles to the Red Dragons' Olivia Fraser, 7-5, 6-1. Koob went into a tiebreaker with Lipscomb, but came out with the win, 5-7, 6-1, 10-4. Grandville defeated Schutte at third singles, 6-3, 6-4, while Batcheller also needed a third set to take a win over Macdonald, 6-4, 4-6, 10-8.
Tatiana Barnett played at fifth singles and beat Oneonta's Jayden Carillo, 6-3, 6-0, while
Alex Chimenti didn't drop a point for the Hawks in sixth singles and won, 6-0, 6-0.
SUNY New Paltz is back in action Saturday as the Hawks are back on the road to conclude their home-and-home with Cortland.
