SUNY New Paltz Field Hockey Falls 2-1 on the Road to Cortland

Cortland, NY — The State University of New York at New Paltz went on the road to face SUNY Cortland with playoff seeding implications on the line.

A win would have given the Hawks the No. 2 seed in the SUNYAC Tournament, along with semifinal hosting rights in the first round. However, they came up just short Saturday and fell to the Red Dragons, 2-1 with Cortland earning the second seed and SUNY New Paltz dropping to No. 3 with the team needing to go back to Cortland to face the Red Dragons in the semifinal round Nov. 2.

The game was scoreless through nearly 40 minutes Saturday with Cortland taking the initial lead off a penalty corner in the 39th minute of the game. The Hawks quickly answered though less than a minute later off a reverse-stick chip by Rachel Tama, who was there to put away the rebound from an initial shot on goal by Natasia Plunkett.

SUNY New Paltz had two prime opportunities to grab the lead when the Red Dragons' Lily Fox was handed a yellow card with four minutes left in the period giving the Hawks a man advantage. They had another man-up situation to start the fourth with Fox given her second yellow. SUNY New Paltz earned one corner during both stretches, but no shots on goal with the Red Dragons holding off the threat before scoring the go-ahead goal with about five minutes left in the game.

The Hawks struggled in the fourth quarter and were held without a shot. They totaled just two attempts at the cage in the second half alone and were out-shot in the game, 11-7, while earning four penalty corners to Cortland's six — four of which came in the second half.

Davin Testo played the full 60 minutes in goal for SUNY New Paltz and totaled four stops, while Miranda Britton led the team offensively with two shots. Hannah Ackerman, Amanda Quenneville, Shannon Bernhardt, Plunkett and Tama each had one.

There are two regular season games left on the docket for the Hawks who face SUNY Oneonta on the road Wednesday before concluding their regular season at Vassar Oct. 29.
