SUNY New Paltz Field Hockey Falls 3-2 in Overtime on the Road at Oneonta

Oneonta, NY — The State University of New York at New Paltz went on the road to face SUNY Oneonta Wednesday with the Hawks falling to the Red Dragons in overtime, 3-2.

The loss dropped SUNY New Paltz to the fourth seed in the SUNYAC Tournament, which begins Nov. 2, sending the Hawks to face top seeded SUNY Geneseo in the first round, while Oneonta earns the third seed and will visit No. 2 Cortland.

The Hawks (9-6 overall, 3-3 SUNYAC) trailed early against the Red Dragons Wednesday, conceding the game opening goal with about five minutes remaining in the first quarter despite dominating the opening 15 minutes. They registered five shots and nine corners in the period, but could not convert as the hosts took advantage on one of their two chances on cage.

Natasia Plunkett helped tie the score early in the third quarter for SUNY New Paltz, scoring off an assist by Rachel Tama. The Hawks then put away the go-ahead goal in the fourth, as Shannon Bernhardt finished on a pass from Hannah Ackerman in the 47th minute on a penalty corner played in by Julia Cummings.

Both teams had chances in front of goal in the final 10 minutes of regulation with SUNY New Paltz goalie Davin Testo and Oneonta's Jennifer Tumino coming up with stops, but with two minutes to go the Red Dragons earned back-to-back corners. The Hawks held off the first, but Oneonta capitalized on its second opportunity and tied the score at 2-2 with about 90 seconds remaining in the period.

SUNY New Paltz earned a penalty corner to start overtime but couldn't capitalize with a shot on net. Shortly after, Bernhardt was hit with a yellow card forcing a man-up opportunity for the Red Dragons with the Hawks holding off any scoring threats until Oneonta put away the game-winner in the 65th to close out the 3-2 outcome.

SUNY New Paltz out-shot the hosts, 13-6, including 12-5 in shots on goal and earned 15 penalty corners to Oneonta's four, with nine coming in the first quarter alone.

Plunkett and Quenneville led the team with four shots apiece with Bernhardt following with three. Testo finished with two stops, playing the full 60-plus minutes.

SUNY New Paltz closes out its regular season Saturday on the road against Vassar College at 6 p.m. before entering the SUNYAC Tournament Wednesday.
