SUNY New Paltz Field Hockey Holds Off Vassar in 1-0 Road Win

Poughkeepsie, NY — The State University of New York at New Paltz traveled across the Hudson River to face off against the Brewers of Vassar College and came away with a 1-0 non-conference victory to close out the regular season.
 
The game was evenly matched as Vassar held the slight edge in shots, 7-6 with six of its attempts coming in the first half with the Hawks limiting the hosts to just one attempt in the final 30 minutes. SUNY New Paltz had more chances on frame, however, 5-2 while Vassar garnered more corners throughout the contest, 4-2 with three coming in the first half.
 
The first quarter kicked off with a goal from Natasia Plunkett off an assist from Morgan Woolley, putting the Hawks up 1-0 within the first nine minutes of play. SUNY New Paltz was able to limit shots on goal from the Brewers and took its lead into halftime. The defense continued to hold up in the second half as they held Vassar to just one shot in the third and fourth quarters which ended up being saved by goalkeeper Gail Comiskey who finished with two saves in the shutout.
 
 
Plunkett finished with the only score of the day and Woolley collected the games only assist in the back-and-forth defensive match with Plunkett and Hannah Ackerman leading the team with two shots apiece on the night.
 
SUNY New Paltz ends the regular season with double-digit wins for the fourth-straight season after improving to 10-6 overall as it enters the postseason. The Hawks earned the fourth seed in the SUNYAC Tournament and will travel to No. 1 seeded SUNY Geneseo Wednesday for a 1 p.m. matchup. The winner will face either No. 2 Cortland or No. 3 Oneonta in the SUNYAC Championship Nov. 5.
