Geneseo, NY — The State University of New York at New Paltz season came to an end Wednesday in the SUNYAC Semifinals against top seed SUNY Geneseo, 4-2.
After a scoreless first quarter, the Hawks took the opening lead with three minutes left in the first half.
Natasia Plunkett earned the corner for SUNY New Paltz with
Miranda Britton inserting the ball to
Hannah Ackerman who found
Shannon Bernhardt. Bernhardt ripped a shot through traffic that found the back corner of cage.
The Hawks took the 1-0 lead into halftime after out-shooting the Knights 7-2 in the opening 30 minutes. Geneseo tied the game five minutes into the third quarter off a penalty corner, which deflected off the stick of the Knights' Darby Matthews for the score.
The Knights took the lead four minutes later after earning another corner.
Gail Comiskey made the initial save but the Hawks weren't able to clear with Maggie Phipps there on the back post to sneak a shot into net for the score.

SUNY New Paltz tied the game once more at 2-2 early in the fourth quarter off a penalty corner earned by Plunkett on a ball played in by
Shannon Bernhardt. The Hawks pass in was mishit, but
Morgan Woolley was there for the heads up play to find Bernhardt who swung the ball to Ackerman. Ackerman cut the ball in, lost one defender and sliced a shot that was tapped in by
Rachel Tama to knot the score.
The momentum stalled there, as the Knights quickly answered one minute later. In a quick transition following a lost possession by the Hawks, Geneseo worked the ball up the field and Emma Fon capitalized with her first of the game. The hosts added one last insurance goal two minutes later with Sam Lewis finishing in front of goal to cement the 4-2 outcome.
SUNY New Paltz out-shot Geneseo, 12-9 and earned eight penalty corners to the Knights five. Plunkett led the team with three shots, followed by
Amanda Quenneville and Tama with two. Comiskey recorded two saves while Testo added one stop in more than 16 minutes in goal.
The Hawks 2022 season comes to an end with the semifinal loss, finishing the season at 10-7 overall. They lose a key senior group in Plunkett, Bernhardt and back
Julia Cummings who each helped the program to a SUNYAC title last season with Bernhardt leaving as a two-time conference champion, taking home titles in 2018 and 2021.
