New Paltz, NY — The American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) released its weekly regional rankings Wednesday with the State University of New York at New Paltz women's volleyball team ranking third in Region III.
The AVCA regional rankings are the first of the season, which have weight for at-large selections in November for the NCAA Tournament. The Hawks are slotted at No. 3 just behind Ithaca College (20-4) and SUNY Cortland (17-4) with the team losing to the latter in five sets last weekend. Also making the top-7 was The College at Brockport (17-5), Manhattanville (18-6), St. John Fisher (16-6) and SUNY Geneseo (11-9).
SUNY New Paltz has faced five of the current AVCA regionally ranked teams this season, including Region II's Smith College (at No. 7), along with Region III's Cortland (No. 2), Brockport (No. 4), Manhattanville (No. 5) and Geneseo (No. 7), going 3-2 in those matches.
The Hawks conclude the regular season on the road at Vassar, playing the hosting Brewers and William Paterson University in a tri-match Saturday starting at 11 a.m. before they enter postseason play at home in the Hawk Center Tuesday against No. 6 seeded Buffalo State in the quarterfinal round.
