New Paltz, NY — The State University of New York at New Paltz battled through a rainy mid-afternoon defensive stalemate for nearly 60 minutes against hosting FDU-Florham Wednesday until Shannon Bernhardt broke through to push the Hawks to a 1-0 win.
 
The Hawks improved to 7-2 overall with the victory and 3-0 on the road. Despite the scoreless draw throughout most of the game, SUNY New Paltz had multiple chances in the circle before Bernhardt's game-winner in the 55th minute of the fourth, and ultimately out-shot the Devils, 17-3 in the game, including 13-3 on goal. The Hawks totaled 11 penalty corners, to just five for the hosts, while earning five in the final 15 minutes.
 
Hannah Ackerman helped earned the corner resulting in the Bernhardt score, as the junior hit in a ball in front of cage that bounced off a FDU-Florham foot to earn the set play. Julia Cummings played in the ensuing corner to Bernhardt who fired, beating Devils keeper Emily Prachthauser (11 saves) for the her fifth goal of the season. Ackerman and Bernhardt led the way offensively with four shots apiece for the Hawks, followed by Amanda Quenneville with three. Davin Testo played all 60 minutes in goal and registered three saves.
 
SUNY New Paltz is back on the road Saturday for a SUNYAC game against Geneseo Saturday at 12 p.m.
