The State University of New York at New Paltz IHSA team competed at Centenary Saturday, while its NCEA team competed against Lynchburg.
The Hawks placed second of six teams at Centenary, while falling 5-2 against the Hornets.
Against Lynchburg,
Brynley Smith and
Alanna Ryan each won their matchups in fences. Smith scored 75 points on Story, beating the Hornets' Jacqueline Needle who recorded 73 points. Ryan won convincingly in her matchup on Ava, as she registered 81 points to just 69 points by Lynchburg's Emma Schweizer. Her 81 points scored was the highest individual score by the Hawks on the day.
SUNY New Paltz struggled in flat and was edged in each head-to-head, except for a tie between Ryan and the Hornets' Taylor Herzog, as they both scored 69 riding Topi. The Hawks scored a total of 496.25 points, while Lynchburg finished with 541.5.
At Centenary, SUNY New Paltz qualified four athletes to regionals including Abby Artz (novice),
Brie Costello (novice),
Miko McGovern (open flat) and
Devyn Looney (open fences and open flat).
McGovern placed sixth in open fences Saturday and first in open flat, riding Bardento and Rockwell, respectively.
Nora Greenfieldt secured second in intermediate fences on Silverstone and also placed third in intermediate flat on Rolex.
Djuna Dechert earned fifth and fourth place outings in limit fences and limit flat, respectively, while
Juliette Barkman secured third in limit fences and fifth in limit flat. Win Schmitt placed fifth in limit fences and sixth in limit flat, while
Sara Marriott finished fourth and sixth in limit fences and limit flat, respectively. Costello placed fourth in limit flat on Mo, while
Emma Mearkle secured third in novice flat on Signature.
The Hawks' NCEA team also competed Friday against Sweet Briar and lost, 5-3. Once again SUNY New Paltz's strongest performances came in fences as it won three of four head-to-head matchups against the Vixens in the event. Looney defeated Kacie Freeburg of Sweet Briar, 74-70 riding Phantom. Ryan earned a 75-72 victory over Britt Larson-Jackson on Jetson and Smith scored the highest total for the Hawks on the day with 76 points on Cardino to defeat Katherin Atherton (73).
SUNY New Paltz was shut out in flat with the closest score coming from Smith who scored a 69 riding Mulligan but wasn't enough to defeat the Vixens Emmy Longest's 75.5 points. The Hawks totaled 561 in the meet to Sweet Briars' 625.5.
SUNY New Paltz's NCEA competition is done for the season with the team finishing the year at 2-6 overall. The Hawks' IHSA team will resume competition April 2 at regionals held at Marist College's Crosswinds Equestrian Center.
