SUNY New Paltz Baseball Game Preview: Mount Saint Mary College

NEW PALTZ, NY — The State University of New York at New Paltz baseball team will look to end its four-game losing streak when it takes on Mount Saint Mary College in a weekend doubleheader from Fishkill, NY. The Hawks duel with the Knights Saturday at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. In two previous matchups this season, SUNY New Paltz defeated Mount Saint Mary College by scores of 15-1 and 7-3 back on Feb. 19 and 20.

The Hawks come into the back-to-back set having lost the aforementioned four games by scores of 8-5 to St. Mary's College of Maryland on Feb. 20, 8-2 and 5-4 to Virginia-Wesleyan and Ithaca College on Feb. 25, and once again to the Bombers 13-8 on Feb. 26. The Knights are looking for their first win of the season after an 0-3 start.

In the 15-1 season opening victory, SUNY New Paltz tallied 14 hits to Mount Saint Mary College's three, with Nick Harvey picking up the win and Bobby Moeller getting the save. Harvey gave up two hits and struck out four batters over five innings, while Moeller was sensational in striking out seven while giving up just one hit and one run in four innings pitched. Dean Stalzer also had a great game for the Hawks, going 5-for-5 with four home runs and eight RBI. Jordan Rios, Ryan Mackle, Joe Patane, Justin Harvey and Matt Laurelli all picked up one RBI apiece. For the Knights, senior first baseman Coleman Barnes went 1-for-3 with an RBI double.
Michael Boccarossa

In the 7-3 SUNY New Paltz win in the second game of the doubleheader, Stalzer and Justin Ortiz each had two RBI, with Ortiz going 2-for-4 and Stalzer 1-for-3. Barnes again led the charge for the opposition, connecting on all three of his at-bats and registering 3 RBI. Barnes has been stellar for his team this year as he is 5-for-8 with two doubles and four RBI. In between the two games against the Hawks, Mount Saint Mary lost to St. Mary's College of Maryland by a score of 16-6 in six innings.

Stalzer is batting .360 with three home runs and 11 RBI thus far, while Michael Boccarossa is not far behind, hitting .353 with six hits, including two doubles, and five RBI. He is coming off a strong game against Ithaca College where he went 2-for-4 with 4 RBI and a walk.

SUNY New Paltz is seeking not only to end its losing streak Saturday, but also to extend its winning streak against the Knights to four games. The Hawks' last loss against the program was a 3-2 decision on March 7, 2020.
