NEW PALTZ, NY — The State University of New York at New Paltz women's lacrosse team takes its 1-1 record into the weekend as it plays Hartwick College Saturday on North Turf Field at 1 p.m.
The Hawks split their first two games and will face a Hartwick Hawk team that had its first scheduled game of the year, a Feb. 26 contest against SUNY Canton, postponed. Last season, Hartwick finished with a 2-3 regular season record, and defeated Russell Sage 19-4 in the first round of the Empire 8 Tournament. In the semifinal, the Hawks lost to St. John Fisher College 22-3.
SUNY New Paltz opened its season with an 11-3 loss against Western Connecticut State on Feb. 23. Scoring goals in the game for the Hawks were
Megan Kerr,
Kaitlyn Shaw, and
Katie Zito. A Feb. 27 game at Utica was postponed, and in its game Wednesday against Farmingdale State, SUNY New Paltz emerged victorious, 11-9.
The Hawks' game against the Rams got off to a rough start, as Farmingdale State scored the first three goals. Shaw countered at 9:06 for her second goal of the season, but the Rams responded when Marina Zumbrunn scored at the 6:15 mark.
SUNY New Paltz then started to get going as
Maddy Carullo,
Kira Tucker and Shaw all scored in succession to tie the contest before Farmingdale State's Megan Diamond gave her squad a 5-4 edge. Shaw scored again to tie the game at five and connected yet again to tie the game at six. Down 7-6 after Athena Vogiatzis scored her third of four goals on the day, the home team reeled off four straight scores, including three more by Zito and one more by Carullo, with Zito's goal at the 3:03 mark of the third giving the Hawks a three-goal lead that did not relinquish. Shaw, Carullo and then Zito scored once again to complete the four-goal win, 13-9.
SUNY New Paltz and its weekend opponent have a history going back to March 24, 2011. The Hawks won that matchup 10-9, and went on to win the next three by scores of 21-8, 16-10, and 14-13. It was not until March 20, 2017 that Hartwick College defeated SUNY New Paltz at home in Oneonta, NY by a 11-10 count. Since, the SUNY New Paltz Hawks have won three consecutive matchups, including 19-7 in the two schools' last meeting on March 7, 2020.
With a win Saturday, SUNY New Paltz would not only extend its winning streak over the Hawks to four, but would improve to 2-1 this season before it heads to Galloway, NJ March 12 for a clash with the Stockton University Ospreys.
