SUNY New Paltz Softball Weekend Preview: Plattsburgh and Potsdam

The State University of New York at New Paltz softball team takes its 11-7 record into two weekend doubleheaders that will see them take on 3-7 Plattsburgh State Saturday, and the SUNY Potsdam Bears Sunday. Saturday's action is set for 2 p.m. and 4 p.m., while Sunday's games are 12 p.m. and 2 p.m.

The Hawks come into the weekend off a Wednesday doubleheader where they hosted St. Joseph's College-Long Island, and defeated the Golden Eagles 8-0 and 13-1, both in five innings. Madison Maggs was 2-for-2 in the opening tilt, while Jillian Shelbourne registered three RBI. Lindsay Roman struck out four batters, giving up just one hit in four innings of work, while Jillian Harrison helped close the shutout. In the 13-1 win, Jackie Rometo went 3-for-4 with a double, three runs and an RBI. Kelly Marmorowski was 3-for-4 with one double, three RBI and two runs. SUNY New Paltz's pitching staff of Harrison, Sydney Waldon, and Erin Barno collectively gave up just two hits and game two with Waldon striking out four batters and Harrison earning the win.

The Hawks will look to hand the Cardinals their third and fourth consecutive defeats when the teams meet Saturday. Carol Ann Campsey

Plattsburgh lost its final two contests of the PFX Spring Games, 5-2 to Utica University and 3-1 to the University of Wisconsin-River Falls. The team's three wins have come against St. Norbert College by a score of 10-2 in five innings, and back-to-back 2-1 and 5-1 victories over Western New England College and Mount Saint Mary, respectively. Preceding those two latest victories was a four-game losing streak.

The Cardinals' rather futile offense, which has scored just 25 runs in 10 games, is led by Kristen Langdon, Julia Golino, and Claire Palmer, who have registered 13, 12, and 12 hits respectively. Langdon leads the team in batting average at .394, and also is in first place on the squad in RBI with six and total bases with 15. Palmer leads in runs with six.

Seeing the most action on the mound for Plattsburgh thus far has been Kristina Maggiacomo, who has a record of 2-2 and has four starts in six appearances. In 28 innings, she has given up 30 hits, 12 earned runs, and has walked 11 batters while striking out 23. She has pitched four complete games, while Golino leads the team in strikeouts with 29. She is 1-3 in eight appearances with three complete games and has given up 38 hits and 18 earned in 25 innings.

SUNY New Paltz hosts SUNY Potsdam on Sunday in a doubleheader, a group that through March 30 has yet to win a game this season. The Bears face off against SUNY Oneonta in a doubleheader on Saturday before facing the Hawks.

The Bears' offense has not been able to get on track this season, with just 16 runs as of March 30, a statistic that does not bode well for them going up against a strong Hawk pitching staff. The offense also has mustered just 20 hits all season as of March 30, with Vanessa Brandt leading them in that department with five. She also leads the team in at-bats with 16, runs with three, doubles with one, has six total bases and has registered one RBI. Brandt is second on the team in batting average at .313, while Kaylee Dobransky heads the squad with an average of .333. Dobransky, in 12 at-bats, has four hits. No Bears have homered this season, and they have just eight RBI as a team.

Despite the Bears' current last place ranking in the SUNYAC, a conference game is nothing to overlook, and SUNY New Paltz has to be careful in making sure that they do not take their opponent for granted and take full opportunity of a chance to keep pace in the standings with 9-5 SUNY Geneseo and 7-5 SUNY Brockport.
