SUNY New Paltz Women's Lacrosse Falls 17-4 to Hosting SUNY Cortland

CORTLAND, NY – The State University of New York at New Paltz women's lacrosse team lost its third straight game on Wednesday evening, falling to SUNY Cortland by a score of 17-4.

The Red Dragon offense proved too much for the Hawks, as the home team got four goals from Toni Cashman and three from Hannah Lorenzen. Kaitlyn Shaw was terrific for SUNY New Paltz, scoring two goals in the fourth quarter within two minutes and five seconds of each other, her 29th and 30th scores of the season. For the entire game, the road team totaled 17 shots and nine on-goal, while the SUNYAC's top seed tallied 23 with 21 on goal, and seven assists to the Hawks' one.

"Overall, I think Cortland is a really talented team," said SUNY New Paltz coach Randy Vite. "I don't think the score reflects our effort and opportunities."

The Red Dragons showed their talent early, as Cashman scored into the top left of the net just two minutes and 10 seconds into the game. Lauren Hopsicker then scored her first of three goals just 47 seconds later to give her team a 2-0 advantage. With 10:12 on the clock, Hannah Keech scored her first of the two on the day to make the score 3-0. Down 4-0 after another Cashman goal, the Hawks' Katie Zito made a terrific steal after Shaw nearly scored, and found the back of the net for her 29th goal of the season. Zito's goal made the score 6-1, which ended up being the score after the first 15 minutes of play.

Lorenzen, cutting inside, scored again with 12:33 on the clock in the second quarter, marking the seventh game in a row for the now 8-4 Cortland that they managed at least seven goals in a game.

SUNY New Paltz's Alyssa Indelicato found the net for the fifth time this season late in the quarter, at that point making the count 11-2. Cashman scored just before halftime, and again with 12:15 remaining in the third quarter, the only goal of the third, to put her team up 13-2. Maddy Carullo

After goals from Lorenzen, Emily Goebel, and Sydney Stamboly in the fourth, Shaw countered with two great scores of her own. First, she scored on a strong shot over the middle with 4:50 remaining in the game. She then proceeded to put away a free position goal, giving the Hawks some momentum and a positive take away from the game heading into their weekend tilt at Fredonia State.

"Kaitlyn Shaw is a next level player who is really fun to watch," Vite said. "She is such a hard worker who is a pleasure to coach."

The Hawks, whose record fell to 3-7 and 1-3 in the SUNYAC, matchup with a winless Blue Devils team Saturday at 1 p.m. from Fredonia, NY and will be looking to snap a three-game losing streak.

"This weekend we are looking to put everything together and come up with a big win," Vite said.
