Syracuse, NY — The State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) announced its weekly award winners Monday with freshman second baseman
Jackie Rometo being named as the SUNYAC/PrestoSports Softball Offensive Athlete of the Week.
Rometo becomes the second Hawk honored this season, as
Madison Maggs earned the same honor March 7.
The Montgomery, NY native is off to a prolific start for her first collegiate season. She currently leads the team in batting average at .459, at-bats (74), runs scored (22), hits (34), doubles (9), total bases (48), slugging percentage (.649) and stolen bases (7), and is currently on an 11-game hitting streak.
Over the last week, Rometo earned the start at second base and played sound at the position with a near perfect fielding percentage at .944 with six put-outs and 11 assists. As the team's lead-off hitter, she had at least one hit in each of SUNY New Paltz's six games played, including multi-hit games against St. Joseph's College-Long Island and SUNY Potsdam.
In the Hawks home opening doubleheader against the Eagles, Rometo helped her team to a two-game sweep after going 4-for-7 with four runs, three extra base hits, three RBI and a stolen base, including going 3-for-4 with three runs, an RBI and a double in a 13-1 five-inning win in game two. Against Plattsburgh, Rometo had two hits and another double, before having an explosive day against the Bears the following day. The Valley Central High alum went 6-for-8 in the two-game series against Potsdam, tallying three runs, a walk and six RBI. In game two went 4-for-5 with a double and five RBI to hit .800 in the game. Through six games this week, she registered 19 total bases and six extra base hits with just two strikeouts in 22 at-bats. She finished with a slugging percentage of .864 and an on-base percentage of .560.
Rometo and SUNY New Paltz are back in action Tuesday on the road for a doubleheader against Mount Saint Mary before returning to SUNYAC play with a two-game series against Fredonia Friday and Buffalo State Saturday at Mary Gray Deane Field.
