New Paltz, NY — The State University of New York at New Paltz baseball team released its 2023 schedule Monday, as it enters the season ready to re-set and capture a conference tournament berth for the first time since 2018.
The Hawks will get tested early, as they are scheduled to open up the season in Newport News, Virginia Feb. 18 and 19 to compete in a three-game series against Christopher Newport University — a team that won 27 games a year ago and played four games in the NCAA Tournament after earning an automatic bid.
The team then heads back down south, facing Elmira College, Alfred State and William Peace University, respectively. SUNY New Paltz will play a single nine-inning game against each, taking on The Golden Eagles and Pioneers in a back-to-back at Historic Durham Athletic Park Feb. 25 before facing the Pacers at USA Baseball National Training Complex in Cary, North Carolina Feb. 26.
The Hawks return to New York for an eight-game road stand, playing Mt. Saint Mary College at Dutchess Stadium March 4 for a doubleheader, a three-game series March 10-11 against Centenary University, a single nine-inning contest against Purchase College March 15 and a doubleheader against Kean University March 18.
The following two weeks will prove crucial for the Hawks as they enter SUNYAC play against last year's top-three teams. They are scheduled to face The College at Brockport in their home opener at Loren Campbell Memorial Field March 24 and 25, before going on the road to play 2022 SUNYAC Champions SUNY Cortland. The following weekend, SUNY New Paltz faces last year's top seed in SUNY Oswego, which won 30-plus games and earned a spot in the NCAA Division III Super Regional. The Hawks went 0-9 against the Golden Eagles, Red Dragons and Lakers last season.
Following a non-conference matchup against SUNY Cobleskill April 12, SUNY New Paltz enter another pivotal series against Plattsburgh State April 14 and 15. The Cardinals defeated the Hawks in two of their three matchups late last season to earn the final spot in the SUNYAC Tournament.
April 21-26 sees SUNY New Paltz back in non-conference action, facing Vassar on the road before hosting New York University in a three-game series and ending away with single games at Ramapo College and Russell Sage. The Hawks then travel to Fredonia April 28-29 before ending the regular season at home at Loren Campbell Memorial Field for four-straight games. They host College of Mount Saint Vincent May 2 at 4 p.m. before ending the year with another pivotal conference series against SUNY Oneonta May 5-6, who will also likely challenge for the last remaining spot in the SUNYAC Tournament.
The 2023 SUNYAC Baseball Championship is set to begin May 11 through May 14 at the highest seeds home park in a double-elimination tournament.
