SUNY New Paltz Field Hockey Earns 4-2 Win Over Hartwick

New Paltz, NY — The State University of New York at New Paltz hosted the Hawks of Hartwick Wednesday on North Turf Field and after giving up the game's opening goal countered with four-straight to come away with a 4-2 win.

The hosting Hawks improved to 10-4 overall with the non-conference win and 5-1 on North Turf Field.

Hartwick scored off a penalty corner to take a 1-0 lead with two minutes left in the first quarter and held onto the advantage until midway through the second period. SUNY New Paltz secured back-to-back corners with Rachel Tama putting consecutive shots on goal, but it was Miranda Britton who cleaned up in front of cage to tie the game at 1-1 in the 26th minute.

With the score knotted at one goal apiece, the hosting Hawks stepped up their play to open up the second half and had a dominant third quarter. SUNY New Paltz out-shot Hartwick, 14-1 in the period and generated nine of its 14 total penalty corners in the 15 minutes of play.

Morgan Woolley was the first to capitalize in the period, as she put in her second goal of the season off a penalty corner played in by Britton for the go-ahead score. Amanda Quenneville pushed the lead to 3-1, scoring off an assist by Meghan Gunning.

Tama capped the offensive out-put for the Hawks early in the fourth, putting away her eighth goal on the year off a feed from Hannah Ackerman just a minute into the fourth quarter. Hartwick added one more in the final five minutes, but SUNY New Paltz held on from there for the win.

Eight different players for SUNY New Paltz registered a shot in the outing, including senior back Sam Moran with Tama leading the way for a game-high 13 — all of which were on target, while finishing with a goal and an assist in 52 minutes of action.
