SUNY New Paltz Men's Soccer Collects 3-0 Shutout Win On the Road Over Potsdam

Potsdam, NY — The State University of New York at New Paltz went on the road and collected a 3-0 win over Potsdam Wednesday.

The Hawks (8-1-2 overall, 3-1-1 SUNYAC) had a dominant second half, as they began capitalizing on their chances in the final third. Joseph DiPreta got the offense started, striking a laser from distance to record his sixth of the year off an assist from Philip Varner in the 49th minute.

"We started off a little slow, just had trouble getting used to a slight tactical adjustment and with the tempo building out of the back," said SUNY New Paltz coach Kyle Clancy. "But as the half progressed, we were much better and we created some really good chances down the left with Gabe playing phenomenal and dominating 1-v-1 and then through the middle with some good combination play with Phil, Iyare and our center mids.  Unfortunately, we just couldn't put the ball away. That changed in the second half with a great build up down the right and Phil finding Joey who scored a goalazo to take the lead."
Yare Harris celebrates after his game-winning goal

Owen McGarrity gave SUNY New Paltz an insurance goal, which changed the momentum of the game in the 62nd minute. Off a ball played in by DiPreta, McGarrity got on the other end for his fifth of the season and pushed the lead to 2-0. Brian Boylan then helped put the finishing touches on the win with another goal for the Hawks in the 88th off an assist by Yare Harris.

"Owen's goal got us control of the game and we had a solid rest of the game, limiting any major chances and creating a few more," Clancy said. "Feel like we can still be better in the middle third as the game goes on, but the team worked hard. We got some good contributions off the bench and earned a good road shutout. Overall, I'm happy with the team's performance."

SUNY New Paltz recorded 24 shots, 13 on target, while limiting the Bears to just seven shots and two on frame. Christian Micheli earned the win for the Hawks, registering two saves. Gabriel Cruz led the team with four shots, three on target, in 61 minutes, followed by DiPreta with three, recording a goal and an assist in 60 minutes.

SUNY New Paltz is back on the road Saturday in a big matchup against SUNY Brockport. Kickoff is scheduled for noon.
