Shaw and Malanga Sweep SUNYAC Women's Lacrosse Weekly Honors

Syracuse, NY — The State University of New York at New Paltz (SUNYAC) announced its weekly award winners Monday with the Hawks sweeping the women's lacrosse honors for the second time this season.

Despite being face guarded in both games this past week, SUNY New Paltz junior midfielder Kaitlyn Shaw still led her team offensively in wins over Potsdam and Buffalo State, while senior defender Ella Malanga continued a stand-out season defensively, pacing her team on that end in caused turnovers. Shaw was named SUNYAC Women's Lacrosse Offensive Player of the Week for the second time this season and third time in her career, while Malanga enjoyed her first SUNYAC Women's Lacrosse Defensive Player of the Week selection of her career.

Shaw set a career-high in points in a 17-6 win over the Bears Tuesday, totaling a team-leading six goals and two assist, while adding four ground balls and career-high eight draw controls with one caused turnover.  She put up a team-high four goals with one assist in a 15-3 thrashing of the Bengals Friday, while adding six draw controls to lead her team to their fourth straight win. She also eclipsed the 100-goal mark for her career in the game, joining just seven other Hawks.

Malanga, meanwhile, continued a career season with a career game against Buffalo State. She set new milestones on the weekend in caused turnovers (4) and ground balls (5) and aided a Hawks defense in allowing just nine shots and tying a season-low three goals scored against in the win over the Bengals. She matched those same stats in a dominant 17-6 victory over Potsdam, totaling four ground balls and a team-leading five caused turnovers with SUNY New Paltz holding both teams to a combined 21 shots on goal on the week.
