Mahwah, NJ — Backed by two home runs from
Nick Harvey and six-plus solid innings from starter
Billy Moeller, the State University of New York at New Paltz went on the road and earned a 6-4 win over Ramapo College Tuesday.
The Hawks bumped their record to 10-21 with the win, while the Roadrunners dropped to 20-14. Moeller was given the win and improved to 2-4 with
Liam Ryan earning the save in 2.1 innings pitched.
SUNY New Paltz broke the stalemate in the top of the third, started by a lead-off double from
Mike Ascanio.
Matt Sarni followed up with a single to center with
Tommy Kreider scoring Ascanio on the next at-bat with an RBI base hit through the right side. A batter later, Harvey hammered the first pitch he saw for a three-run home run to push the Hawks lead to 4-0. In Harvey's next at-bat in the fifth he added to the lead with one swing, ripping a solo home run down the right field line to extend the advantage to 5-0.
After Ramapo got a run across in the seventh, the Hawks answered in the top of the eighth.
Michael Boccarossa got on with a fielder's choice and put himself in scoring position with a stolen base. Ascanio came through with an RBI base hit to left center, scoring Boccarossa and creating a 6-1 cushion.
The Roadrunners made the game interesting in the ninth, as a pair of walks and a hit-by-pitch gave Ramapo life, as a double brought the difference down to two. Ryan anchored in though, limiting the damage and getting the final out on a strikeout swinging to secure the victory.
Harvey had a day, going 3-for-5 with two runs and four RBI with a double and two home runs. Ascano followed, hitting 3-for-4 with a run, an RBI and a stolen base. Moeller allowed four hits and one earned run with seven strikeouts and six walks. Ryan yielded one hit with four strikeouts and two walks.
SUNY New Paltz is back on the road Wednesday, facing Purchase College at 5 p.m.
