Game Recap: Field Hockey | | Amy Whitman, Athletic Communications Intern

SUNY New Paltz Field Hockey falls to Rochester 2-1 in a Double Overtime Shootout

Rochester, NY - The State University of New York at New Paltz traveled to face off against the University of Rochester. The Hawks and the Yellowjackets would play into double overtime, with SUNY New Paltz eventually falling to the home team in a penalty shootout, with a final score of 2-1.

The Yellowjackets were quick to get on the board. After a missed opportunity to score from the Hawks, Rochester put one in from a loose ball at the front of the net in the seventh minute of play. The score would stay 1-0 for the entire first quarter.

Going into the second, SUNY New Paltz received a penalty corner, which they took full advantage of. Miranda Britton took the penalty, placing it at the top of the circle where Hannah Ackerman would finish the ball into the net, tying the score at 1-1. Both teams would increase their offensive pressure, the Hawks having three shots in a row at one point. The score was still tied entering the third quarter.

The offensive intensity did not cease, if anything it increased. SUNY New Paltz had three shots on net, and Rochester had two. The fourth quarter proved to be quite the opposite, however, having zero shots recorded from both teams. The score remained tied until the regular time buzzer sounded, and the game went into its first overtime period.

The Hawks produced more offensive opportunities in the overtime period, using two corner opportunities to produce three shots on net. The Yellowjackets faired the same, creating multiple scoring opportunities, but were unsuccessful within the ten minutes. Amanda Quenneville took a shot on cage that was ultimately saved right before the buzzer sounded to signal the end of overtime one, and the start of overtime two.

From the start, SUNY New Paltz was attacking the net, accumulating six shots in five minutes. Rochester would attempt to retaliate with two shots in the latter five minutes, but no shots saw the back of the net, and the teams would go to a shootout.

Rochester took the first shot and made it in. Rachel Tama was first up for the Hawks, but her goal attempt was saved by Rochester. Gail Comiskey stopped the Yellowjackets' second goal attempt, and Angelina Regels was able to put one in for the Hawks. Rochester was then able to get a goal in off Comiskey. Every other shot attempt after was saved, ending the shootout with Rochester victorious, in this battle until the end. The final score was 2-1.

Hannah Ackerman was the Hawks' lone scorer of the match, assisted by Miranda Britton. Gail Comiskey had four saves.

SUNY New Paltz will go on the road again to Mahwah, New Jersey, to face Ramapo College on Wednesday. The Hawks intend to add another win to their impressive 4-1 record.
