SUNY New Paltz Field Hockey Earns 3-0 Shutout Victory Over Ramapo

Mahwah, NJ — The State University of New York at New Paltz bounced back from its first loss of the season with a convincing 3-0 shutout over hosting Ramapo Wednesday afternoon.

The Hawks improved to 5-1 with the victory and once again had an impressive defensive performance, allowing just two shots while securing their third shutout of the season and lowering their goals-against-average to a miniscule 1.17 on the season.

They found the back of the cage early, as Meghan Gunning put away her second of the season after knocking in a rebound off an initial shot by Amanda Quenneville in just the third minute of play. The win was never in doubt from that point forward, as SUNY New Paltz held possession in their opponent's defensive end for the majority of the game.

After earning their fifth penalty corner of the game eight minutes into the second quarter, the Hawks were awarded a penalty stroke after a scrum in front of cage. Hannah Ackerman stepped up and had no doubts of scoring her third of the season as she placed her shot bottom left corner for the goal to boost the lead to 2-0 with less than seven minutes left in the half.

Ayden Fleming then helped put the finishing touches on the win, as she scored off an assist from Rachel Tama to secure her team-leading seventh of the season. SUNY New Paltz held firm from there, walking away with its second road victory of the year.

The Hawks ultimately out-shot Ramapo, 24-2, including 19-1 in shots on goal, while totaling eight penalty corners to the Roadrunners' four. Ackerman and Quenneville each tallied a game-high five shots apiece, followed by Tama with four and Fleming with three. Gail Comiskey earned her third shutout of the season and made one save in the full 60 minutes of action.

SUNY New Paltz is back in action Saturday when it begins SUNYAC play on the road at SUNY Brockport. Game time is scheduled for 11 a.m.
