SUNY New Paltz Women's Volleyball Earns Four-Set Season Opening Win Over Smith at Scranton Invite

On day one of the Scranton Invitational, the State University of New York at New Paltz was victorious over the Smith College Pioneers in a four-set match, 25-21, 21-25, 25-23, 25-12, securing its inaugural win of the 2023 season.

The first set favored the Hawks, with two five-plus point runs, and the Pioneers never scored more than four points at a time. The second and third sets scores went back and forth between SUNY New Paltz and Smith, with the Pioneers winning by four points in the second set and the Hawks victorious by a slim two points in the third. After clinching an imperative third set win, the fourth stanza was when all went right for the Hawks.

SUNY New Paltz started off the set with a kill by Mackenzie Williams, and never relinquished the lead after that. After dominant plays and multiple runs, the Hawks went on to win the fourth and final set by a staggering 13-point differential. "After the second set, we talked about serving more aggressively to capture some momentum," said SUNY New Paltz coach Matt Giufre. "I'm proud of the team for having the guts to take some calculated risks. Smith is a big, athletic team and very fast at the net."
Hawks Women's Volleyball Scrimmage vs. Drew UniversityJamie Albrecht had a great showing on the court, leading both the Hawks and Pioneers in kills (11), along with pacing both teams in points alongside Letisha Perez. The pair raked in 13 points each. Cate DiGiacomo had 24 assists and Melanie Podstupka tallied nine digs.

SUNY New Paltz returns to action Saturday at day two of the Scranton Invitational, facing off against Swarthmore College and Scranton University. Until then, the Hawks have a lot to be proud of.

"We stayed true to who we are and came out with a great first win," Giufre stated. "I'm really pleased with all the contributions we got tonight [and] it was a balanced win."

First serve for the Hawks is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. against the Garnett followed by a 6:30 p.m. match with the hosting Royals.
