Scranton, PA —The State University of New York at New Paltz went on the road Wednesday night to face The University of Scranton and suffered just its third loss of the season, 3-1.
The Hawks (4-3-1 overall, 0-0 SUNYAC) gave up two quick goals within the first five minutes of the game, putting themselves in an early 2-0 deficit. The team locked in following the second score, as they began putting some pressure on the Royals backline. They nearly cut into the score in the 12th minute, as SUNY New Paltz sent a great ball curving across to the six for
Gaby Treble running on back side. The junior got a volley on the cross, but Scranton's goalie Nicole Olson made a highlight reaction save from point blank range to preserve the lead.
Five minutes later the Hawks capitalized, as
Rachel Eisert played a perfectly lofted ball over the top of Scranton's backline to Treble, who took a touch into the box before beating Olson near post for the score.
SUNY New Paltz started gaining some momentum following the score, as Treble narrowly knotted the game at twos. Eisert started the threat, as she played a beautiful ball across on the switch to the feet of Lexi DeLeo who played Treble in toward the left side of the 18-yard box. Treble took a touch to set herself up for a right footed attempt destined for the inside of the far post, but her try went inches wide to keep the score at 2-1 midway through the half.
Madde Franklin showed why she was also an all-conference pick a year ago, making a tremendous save in the 31st minute, getting up to parry a header from the Royals just over the cross bar.
Scranton continued to create chances in its offensive third, as it played in a corner just inside the the box with Alaina McLaughlin taking a touch and firing a shot headed toward the near corner, but Hawks defender
Addison Weiner was there protecting the post to clear the attempt away from net.
SUNY New Paltz stymied the threat until the 38th minute, as the Royals worked the ball down the left side, centering a pass toward the penalty line. The Hawks struggled to get a foot on the pass to break up the play, which allowed Gabrielle Richetti to receive the ball, take a touch and fire a shot from 10 yards out past Franklin for the goal.
The 3-1 score stood for the rest of the second half with Scranton holding the advantage offensively with eight shots in the second half to the Hawks' three. Franklin came up with another nice stop with 23 minutes to go, as the Royals got inside the edge of the six with Niamh Healy trying to sneak a shot past Franklin far post, but the junior got her foot out to make the kick save preventing the ball to get across dangerously along the face of goal.
Treble ripped a loose ball inside the middle of the box in the 74th minute, but Olson handled the strong shot resulting in an ensuing corner, but the Hawks were unable to find a look off the set piece and their offense stalled there, not registering an attempt on goal the rest of the way.
Scranton ultimately out-shot SUNY New Paltz, 17-6 in the game, including 10-5 in shots on target, while garnering nine corners throughout the game and only two for the Hawks. Treble led her team with four shots, three on target in 67 minutes. Franklin ended the game with six saves, while Olson had four.
SUNY New Paltz returns to action Saturday when it hosts Buffalo State on South Turf Field for its first SUNYAC game of the season. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m.
