Danbury, CT — On their fourth straight away game of the season, the State University of New Paltz women's volleyball team did not lose any steam. The Hawks defeated the Western Connecticut State Wolves in a 4-set match, 25-23, 15-25, 25-19, 25-23, and are flying back to the nest with a 3-1 record.
In the first set, it was back and forth, both teams attacking the net. The Hawks, however, had a .419 hitting percentage compared to the Wolves .143. With Western Connecticut having six attack errors and four service errors, SUNY New Paltz used that to its advantage and took the set by a mere 2-point margin.
In the second set, however, the Wolves came out hot with a .368 hitting percentage and kept the Hawks to a .033 hitting percentage with them totaling nine attacking errors. The Wolves won the set by 10 points.

Going into the third and fourth set, SUNY New Paltz had more clean plays and less errors on the court. The third was a tight set, but the Hawks were able to defend and keep the Wolves to 19 points and win the set. The fourth would bear the same results, and SUNY New Paltz was more aggressive in its offense, having a total 42 attack attempts. It was a close set, but in the end, Letisha Perez sealed the deal with a kill assisted by Cate DiGiacomo, and the Hawks won the game.
Many players saw the court Wednesday, but it was a great day to be a middle hitter. Perez totaled 11 kills and 27 total attacks, while Lola Konopa recorded four kills, a season high for the freshman. Mackenzie Williams also had a stellar showing, collecting a season-high 13 kills and adding 11 digs.
The Hawks opens at home Sept. 8, kicking off the Hawks Invitational against the Russell Sage Gators, before taking on Union College and Mount Saint Mary College Sep.t 9, the latter match being their Down Syndrome Awareness Game. Coach Matt Giufre is also closing in on his 500th win, being only one win away from the incredible career milestone.
