Montclair, NJ — The State University of New York at New Paltz went on the road to face No. 17 nationally ranked Montclair State and came up short of getting a result against the Red Hawks, instead falling in a back-and-forth match, 3-2.
Montclair generated more chances on net, out-shooting the Hawks, 19-7, but had a slight 9-4 margin on shots on target as it created most of its scoring opportunities off its nine corners in the game.
The Red Hawks took the lead in just the fourth minute, but the Hawks knotted up the score at 1-1 thanks to a goal by
Kelly Licata in the 10th. Montclair re-upped its lead in the 33rd minute and took a 2-1 lead into halftime.
SUNY New Paltz tied the match at two goals apiece less than 10 minutes into the second half. Off a throw in,
Rachel Eisert brought the ball down, weaved through two defenders and sent a dangerous ball in front of the six with
Brooke Kelleher hustling to meet the cross from the opposite side. Kelleher showed her speed in beating the keeper to the ball and got enough of a touch to re-direct the ball in the back of the net for her third goal of the season.
The stalemate didn't last long, however, as the Red Hawks worked the ball back down on their offensive end, getting endline and then lofting a ball back inside the six-yard box for what turned into a game-winning goal in the 56th minute.
Arguably, SUNY New Paltz's best chance on net came in the 73rd on a ball played through to Licata who found some space inside the box. Licata had help coming up near the far post, but instead took an opportunity on goal with her shot going just wide of frame.
Laney Schmitz fired a shot on goal shortly after but couldn't get enough power behind the 30-foot attempt, as it was handled by Montclair's keeper.
Despite the three goals against,
Maddie Franklin (five saves) did well managing a dangerous Red Hawks attack, continuing to time balls through well and made an impressive reaction save from point-blank range in the 63rd to hold the difference to one.
Down by a goal with just less than 10 minutes left, SUNY New Paltz right back
Addison Weiner was given her second yellow card of the game and was forced out with the Hawks required to play the rest of the match with just 10 and were held without a shot the rest of the way.
The Hawks dropped to 1-2 with the loss with their lone win coming at home in their season opener. They're back in action Saturday and Sunday, competing in the Drew Fall Festival tournament, playing Stockton at 1 p.m. Saturday and the hosting Rangers Sunday at 2:30 p.m.
