SUNY New Paltz Men’s Soccer Earns 2-0 Road Win Over Canton

Canton, NY — The State University of New York New Paltz remain unbeaten in SUNYAC play as it collected three more points with a 2-0 road win over SUNY Canton Saturday.

The Hawks (8-4-1 overall, 4-0-1 SUNYAC) used two first half goals to build a cushion in a game where they generated numerous opportunities with 28 total shots, 12 of which were on goal. The Kangaroos (3-11-1, 0-5-0) meanwhile, tallied 11 chances, five of which were on frame.

Christian Micheli collected his first save of the game in the 28th minute with SUNY New Paltz transitioning quickly the other way. It capitalized shortly after, as Kieran Weber laid a service into the box for Bryan Lizama who finished far post for his fifth of the season.

Less than 10 minutes after the game's first goal, the Hawks continued to keep pressure on Canton's back line. Ryan Zindler found space and ripped a shot that was deflected out of bounds leading to a corner. David Acker served the ensuing set piece in and found Ryan Bochenski whose attempt went just wide. However, SUNY New Paltz made sure to keep the ball in its offensive end, as it won the ball off the ensuing goal-kick with Colin Brant slotting a pass to Tim Kane for his first goal of the season and pushing the score, 2-0.

The Hawks earned a corner in the final minute of the half with Acker getting a look to try extending the lead, but the ball was corralled by Kangaroos keeper Nolan Sullivan.

Both teams were shutout in the second half with Canton making a goalie change to Jason Vela who totaled seven stops in the 45 minutes with Sullivan finishing with three after allowing two. Micheli kept the clean sheet for the fourth time on the year and finished with five saves.

SUNY New Paltz hopes to extend its winning streak to five and add another win in conference play when it visits SUNY Plattsburgh Wednesday for a 3 p.m. match.
