SUNY New Paltz Field Hockey Falls to No. 8 Cortland, 5-1

Cortland, NY – The State University of New York New Paltz traveled upstate to play the No. 8 nationally ranked Cortland Red Dragons Saturday.

The No. 19 Hawks held their own and had a strong defensive presence going into the second half only behind 2-1. Nonetheless, the Hawks were not able to capitalize offensively, with the Red Dragons holding the Hawks to their season-low shots on goal (4) in what turned into a 5-1 loss.

The defeat dropped SUNY New Paltz to 3-1 in SUNYAC play with the Red Dragons clinching the No. 1 seed in the SUNYAC Tournament for the second consecutive year, while the Hawks claimed second for the second-straight time.

SUNY New Paltz's four shots on goal were evenly distributed amongst Hannah Ackerman, Miranda Britton, Rachel Tama, and Amanda Quenneville. Captain Rachel Tama scored the sole goal for the Hawks in the first quarter with a bullet from the top of the circle to answer back to Cortland's initial goal.

Sophomore goalie, Madison Orsini, made 12 saves with 17 shots faced, out-shining the Red Dragon's three saves. Orsini was tested just minutes into the first quarter, with Cortland's Hanna Corrigan sneaking one by on a close range shot. Orsini faced a lot of action today, with 13 penalty corners from the Dragons.

The Hawks return home for an early week matchup against Ramapo Tuesday before they travel to play Vassar Friday to close out the regular season. SUNY New Paltz will hope to end a three-game losing streak, as it enters its last two games of the regular season at 12-4 overall.
