SUNY New Paltz Field Hockey Earns 5-1 Win Over Ramapo

Hawks score five-straight to roll past Roadrunners and end three-game losing streak

New Paltz, NY — The State University of New York New Paltz ended a three-game losing skid Tuesday afternoon, scoring five unanswered to roll past visiting Ramapo College, 5-1 on North Turf Field.

The Hawks offense re-ignited after scoring just three goals in their three-game slump. Miranda Britton was the catalyst, as the junior was a part of three of the team's five goals, including the game-tying goal that sparked the five-goal run.

The Roadrunners scored first on their first threat at the cage, clearing quickly after SUNY New Paltz earned back-to-back corners. Ramapo got out in transition after an aerial on a re-start. They capitalized on a semi-transition with its first shot on goal in the fifth minute of the game.

The Hawks answered two minutes later, stemming off a good look by Maya O'Keefe to find Miranda Britton near the 25. Britton slotted a ball through to Rachel Tama who got inside the circle to earn a corner. Britton inserted the ensuing set play with Tama firing a shot near post with Britton there to track the shot mid-air and get a tip on the attempt for her 17th of the season.

Tama officially gave her team the lead midway through the second quarter, taking advantage of another corner but this time finding the back of the net off the direct pass from Britton. SUNY New Paltz piled on four minutes later on another smooth transition down field as Ashley McGough slipped a ball to Britton who found herself 1-v-1 in the circle with the Roadrunners keeper. Britton timed her attempt well and got her shot past the approaching goalie for her second of the day.

SUNY New Paltz added another before the end of the half, as Britton generated another corner, finding a foot of a Ramapo defender in the circle. She inserted once again, this time to Hannah Ackerman, who fired for her fifth goal of the season to push the lead to 3-1.

McGough put the finishing touches on the win, scoring the Hawks' last goal of the game in the 42nd minute. Meghan Gunning helped stem the play, as her tight pressure on the re-defend near the endline forced a bad pass that went out of bounds, resulting in a free hit for SUNY New Paltz. Ackerman then swung a pass in front of the goal, catching the Roadrunners flat footed and finding McGough open in front of goal who one-timed a shot to add to her team's lead and notch her 10th of the season.

The Hawks controlled the game throughout, out-shooting Ramapo, 21-5 including 18-5 in shots on goal and tallied 16 corners to the Roadrunners one. Tama had a game-high six shots, all of which were on goal, with a goal and an assist. Britton, Ackerman and Quenneville followed with three shots apiece with Britton finishing with two goals and two assists, as she tied a career-high with six points. Ackerman added and a goal and an assist, while McGough recorded two shots with a goal and an assist off the bench.

Madison Orsini and Gail Comiskey split time in goal with the former totaling three saves and the latter registering one in the win.

SUNY New Paltz improved to 13-4 overall with the victory as it concludes its regular season Friday night on the road at Vassar. The Hawks return home for at least one last home game, hosting SUNY Oneonta in the SUNYAC semifinal round of the conference tournament Nov. 6 at 2 p.m.
