Syracuse, NY — For the second consecutive week, the State University of New York at New Paltz swept weekly women's lacrosse honors as senior
Kaitlyn Shaw and sophomore
Mia Baldinger were named as the offensive and defensive players of the week, respectively, by the conference office Monday.
Shaw earned her second-straight offensive player of the week honor after guiding the Hawks to another two wins on the week. The senior captain paced her team offensively, totaling seven goals and five assists for 12 points through wins over Kean University and St. Joseph's-Long Island.
In a 14-5 triumph over the Cougars in SUNY New Paltz's home opener Wednesday, Shaw tallied two goals and two assists with two draw controls, four ground balls and two caused turnovers. With her second goal of the game, Shaw not only gave the Hawks a 9-2 lead to end the third quarter, which kept momentum shifted over to her team's side, but the score officially etched the Rye Brook, NY native as the program's all-time goals leader with 131 career goals, surpassing the feat in just three seasons that was held since 2012. Shaw backed up that performance with a game-high five goals and eight points in a 22-5 road rout of the Golden Eagles. She added three assists with one ground ball and six draw controls.
Baldinger, meanwhile, had a career week in her own right. The sophomore, Massapequa, NY native totaled two ground balls with a caused turnover to go along with a goal and two assists against Kean Wednesday before being the catalyst in the win over St. Joseph's-LI two days later. With the Hawks down two players defensively, Baldinger was moved into the backer role of SUNY New Paltz's zone defense and stepped in seamlessly in the new spot. She forced eight caused turnovers, which was one shy of tying the single game program record that was set by teammate
Morgan Woolley two days prior that broke the previous record of six. Not only leading the way defensively, Baldinger facilitated the offense as well, adding a game-high five assists with three goals and totaled a game- and career-high six ground balls.
SUNY New Paltz (5-0 overall) is back in action Saturday when it hosts SUNY Maritime on North Turf Field at 2 p.m.
