New Paltz, NY — The State University of New York at New Paltz hosted SUNY Oneonta Tuesday on Mary Gray Deane Field, a makeup of the previously scheduled matchup April 13.
The Hawks improved to 20-4 overall and a perfect 6-0 in the SUNYAC after taking care of the Red Dragons, winning game one, 5-2 before sneaking a 2-1 victory in game two, taking advantage of the visitors miscues in the field.
Lindsay Roman earned the win for SUNY New Paltz in game one, giving up just six hits, two earned runs, no walks with two strikeouts in a full seven innings pitched.
The first inning had a weird start, as the Red Dragons opened up with some small ball as they led off with a bunt single and then advanced on a steal following an errant throw into the field by
Kelly Marmorowski from her spot behind the plate. Roman forced a short blooper that had a tough back spin on the next at-bat and she couldn't corral the catch as she was given an error to put runners on the corners.
On the play, the runner at first put Hawks second baseman
Lauren Serrao in a pickle attempting to advance to second. The Red Dragons were heads-up on the base paths as they took off for home. Serrao lost her footing as she tried making an attempt at the plate, but Oneonta got the runner across to take the early lead. Roman got out of the inning after Rionna Bianchini gunned down the runner at home who tried to score on a single to shallow right, before a pop out ended the frame.

In the bottom half,
Kelsey O'Brien got the inning going on a one-out base hit with
Jillian Shelbourne following, as she earned a base on a fielder's choice with O'Brien beating the attempt at second. An error on a muffed grounder at second loaded the bases for Mamorowski who got O'Brien home on a fielder's choice. Shelbourne then gave SUNY New Paltz the lead, scoring on a wild pitch.
Sydney Bonewit helped add on as her soft grounder back to the pitcher was mishandled, allowing Marmorowski to score on the error to push the lead to 3-1.
Roman had a clean 1-2-3 inning in the second.
Jackie Rometo made a highlight play in center field, stretching out on a ball tailing toward right field to secure the flyout but landed awkwardly on the catch and was forced to sit the remainder of the day.
Filancia added an insurance run in the bottom of the frame, ripping an RBI base hit up the middle to score O'Brien from second base. The Hawks then tallied another run in the sixth to cap the scoring in the game. O'Brien scored
Maddie Anderson after the freshman had a good plate appearance, staying patient to earn a walk then getting herself in scoring position with her first steal of her career.
Roman gave up one in the seventh, but ended the threat on a pop-up, stranding two on the base paths to secure her ninth win of the year.
O'Brien led the team offensively, going 3-for-4 with two runs and an RBI. Shelbourne went 2-for-4 with a run while Filancia finished 2-for-4 with an RBI.
"As of right now we're undefeated so we wanted to keep that going," Filancia said. "Oneonta has been so good in the past years, and we've been rivals this year and last year, so we came out here and knew what we had to do and what game we had to play."
Filancia was the catalyst in game two, backed by her defensive prowess at third base. She opened up the game with a one-out double to start the bottom of the first, but SUNY New Paltz couldn't take advantage as Oneonta earned two-straight strikeouts to leave Filancia stranded.
The Red Dragons countered with a leadoff double to left center to begin the second, but Filancia quickly cleared the bases making a reactionary catch on a laser hit at third, then having the wherewithal to throw out the runner at second for the double play.
"Especially in the hot corner with runners on, we always have to be ready and this game it just seemed to be a battle between the batters and third base," she said.
The defensive prowess continued as she made another highlight catch at third, this time getting up for the liner heading into shallow right to make the catch for the second out of the fifth. She then helped her team take the lead in the bottom of the frame, hitting a dribbler to short that was one hopped to first, allowing Filancia to arrive safely and
Sophia D'Arcangelis to score from third with two outs.
"I hit that ball at 0-2, and I just knew we had runners on with two outs and two strikes and I just came up for my team and did what I had to do," Filancia said.
The play was all SUNY New Paltz needed as
Sydney Waldon did the rest to close out. She pitched the full seven innings, allowed seven hits, one walk and one earned run with one strikeout and improved to 10-1 on the year.
Bianchini was the only other run scored for the Hawks, as she tied the game in the second following an error at first on a missed throw off a grounder to short by
Emmie Mae Cabrera.
Lauren Serrao was the only other hit for SUNY New Paltz in the game, which came on a perfectly placed blooper over the third base side that landed just inside the right field line to extend the threat in the fifth.
"Honestly, of course a good team always has their highs and lows, and even though we won [today], I think we had some lows in the game so that's all out of our system and we're going to go in with high hopes and play like we can," added Filancia as her team returns to SUNYAC play on the week with hopes to extend their winning streak.
SUNY New Paltz continues SUNYAC play in its first road conference weekend, scheduled to play Potsdam and Plattsburgh in doubleheaders Friday and Saturday, respectively.
