SUNY New Paltz Softball Extends Winning Streak, Earns Doubleheader Sweep of Mount Saint Mary College

Box Score Newburgh, NY — The State University of New York at New Paltz went back on the road to face Mount Saint Mary College Tuesday, looking to extend its winning streak with a pair of wins.

The Hawks had the hot bats early, as Kelly Marmorowski ripped her fourth and fifth home runs of her career and first two of the season, as she helped propel a 7-0 victory in game one. In game two, SUNY New Paltz used a five run sixth inning to put the hosting Knights away, 11-2.

The Hawks jumped on Mount Saint Mary early, scoring four runs at the top of the inning in the opening game of the afternoon. Jackie Rometo and Kelsey O'Brien led off with back-to-back hits with Jillian Shelbourne batting them in with a two-RBI double. Marmorowski then capped the inning with a two-run shot two batters later to bring the lead to 4-0.

Marmorowski struck another two-run home run to extend the lead to 6-0 with the Hawks adding one more in the sixth thanks to a RBI single by Kelsey O'Brien who drove in Jackie Rometo with Rometo getting on with a two-out base hit, then stealing second to put herself in scoring position.

Rometo went 3-for-4 including a triple with two runs and a stolen base. O'Brien went 2-for-4 with one run and one RBI, while Jillian Shelbourne hit 2-for-4 with one run and two RBI.

Sydney Waldon pitched a full six innings for a complete game win to help the Hawks earn a doubleheader sweep Tuesday. She gave up just three hits, one earned run, one walk and had five strikeouts.

Rometo led off the game with walk and got herself home after stealing second and then getting hit in during the next at-bat by O'Brien with a base hit up the middle. The Knights tied the game in the bottom half, but SUNY New Paltz took the lead in the third. Again, Rometo got things going leading off with a single with O'Brien following her with a base hit. O'Brien then later scored on a sacrifice fly by Jaycee Filancia to create a 3-1 cushion.

The Hawk added two more in the fourth and then took a 6-1 lead going into the bottom of the fifth. Mount Saint Mary's earned back a run in the bottom half, but SUNY New Paltz took the win in the sixth.

Rometo again led off with a base hit, followed by a double from O'Brien with the two getting home from a two-RBI single by Shelbourne. Filancia doubled to get Shelbourne home. Halle Sacharoff plated Filancia three batters later with Emmie Mae Cabrera capping the offense with a sacrifice fly to bring the lead to 11-2.

O'Brien led the team offensively, going 4-for-4 with two runs and two RBI. Filancia was a perfect 2-for-2 with two runs, two RBI and one walk. Rometo went 2-for-3 with three runs and a walk. Rometo, Filancia, Rhionna Bianchini and Sydney Bonewit each added a stolen base.
