Syracuse, NY — The State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) announced its weekly softball awards Monday with Hawks senior
Lindsay Roman and junior
Jackie Rometo earning Pitcher and Player of the Week, respectively.
The Hawks swept the SUNYAC Softball weekly honors for the first time on the year with Roman and Rometo becoming the third and fourth selections to a conference weekly accolade this season, joining
Kelsey O'Brien (March 11, Player) and
Sydney Waldon (March 28, Pitcher).
Rometo led SUNY New Paltz's offensive efforts in a pair of SUNYAC sweeps over Oswego and Cortland Saturday and Sunday to open up conference play. Rometo came alive at the plate over the weekend, as she produced nine hits with seven RBI and three stolen bases, while hitting .750 with an on-base percentage of .800 and slugging percentage of .750. In game one against the Lakers, she went 1-for-2 with a walk and a stolen base before going 3-for-4 with three RBI in game two. Two of her three RBI came in clutch, as she tied the game at 2-2 for the Hawks in the bottom of the third to help them take the eventual, 7-3 win.
Against the Red Dragons, Rometo went 1-for-2 in game one with a run scored, which helped SUNY New Paltz to a 3-0 win. In game two, she was perfect at the plate hitting 4-for-4 with one run, four RBI and a walk in a 16-10 victory.
Roman made three appearances for the Hawks in their opening SUNYAC weekend and all three turned into wins as she was lights out to lead her team to series wins over Oswego and Cortland.
Against the Lakers Saturday, she threw a full seven innings and gave up just six hits, one walk and one earned run with seven strikeouts in a 3-1 victory. In the opening game against the Red Dragons Sunday, she earned her third complete game shutout victory of the year after tossing a full seven innings and allowing just four hits with no walks, while totaling three strikeouts in a dominant performance. Roman was needed in relief against Cortland in game two and closed out the final 2.2 innings to solidify a 16-10 win. She allowed just one earned run with a strikeout, earning the victory and improving her record to 7-3 on the year.
SUNY New Paltz is back in action Tuesday on the road against Mount Saint Mary for a doubleheader starting at 3 p.m.
