Syracuse, NY — The State University of New York at New Paltz released its weekly conference honors Monday with Hawks sophomore
Fabian Apicella earning his first career SUNYAC Athlete of the Week recognition.
Apicella is the third Hawk to earn the weekly honor, joining
Tommy Kreider (April 1) and
Anthony Pericolosi (April 8). With the selection of Apicella Monday, the three honorees are the most for SUNY New Paltz baseball since 2018.
Apicella, from Howard Beach, NY, led the team offensively in a road series win over Brockport Friday and Saturday. He was impressive in the batter's box, going 7-for-10 with three runs, four RBI and a walk, while adding two stolen bases as he hit .700 with an on-base-percentage of .727.
In a game one 10-6 win, Apicella went 2-for-3 with four RBI as he gave SUNY New Paltz the initial 2-0 lead in the fourth, before adding two more with a two-RBI base hit in the seventh to extend the score to 10-5. He went 2-for-3 once again in game two, before adding to an offensive barrage in a 10-1 win in game three where he finished 3-for-4 with a walk and two stolen bases.
The two victories over the Golden Eagles were critical for the Hawks playoff position, as they currently sit third in the league standings at 7-5 in the SUNYAC, while their 19 wins on the year is the most since the 2016 season when they went 20-16-2.
SUNY New Paltz hopes to add more to the win column in a packed week at home, starting with a single game against Mount Saint Vincent Tuesday at 3 p.m.
