Oswego, NY — The State University of New York at New Paltz suffered a 12-8 loss on the road against Oswego State Saturday.
The Hawks fell to 4-6 overall and 0-2 in the SUNYAC, losing its second consecutive after a tough loss in overtime against Brockport last Saturday.
It was a tight affair throughout 45 minutes Saturday against the Lakers with the score tied at eight entering the fourth quarter but with injuries suffered to SUNY New Paltz top attackers, Oswego took advantage with four unanswered goals to take the win.
Thomas Armetta opened up the game with an early goal with a ground ball pick up off the opening faceoff by
Colin Cleary. The Lakers answered with five straight goals before
Anthony Senecal cut into the run with four minutes to play in the game.
John Reese trimmed into the deficit, picking up a ground ball in front of cage off an initial shot from
Nate Urban, putting in the put-back goal to cut the score, 5-3.
Senecal scored off a feed from
Ryan Scully to get the Hawks within one early in the second quarter. After tying the score at 5-5,
John Reese netted a man-up goal from an assist from
James Flanagan to re-take the lead for SUNY New Paltz, but Oswego scored to end the period to tie the game at six goals apiece at the half.
Two goals to start the third quarter allowed the Lakers to take an 8-6 lead three minutes into the third period.
Deacon Hill got the Hawks within one as he answered with a goal following a size from
Ryan Steinhart and a good clear to the offensive end.
Aiden Jones then tied the score one last time, scoring off an assist from Scully to tie the game at 8-8 with seven minutes left in the quarter.
SUNY New Paltz killed a minute's worth of penalties to end the quarter and to start the fourth, but Oswego still managed to re-take the lead three minutes into the quarter off a long offensive set.
The Lakers dominated possession in the final 15 minutes, out-shooting the Hawks 18-4 in the period, while winning all four faceoffs in the period.
Senecal led SUNY New Paltz with three points on two goals and an assist, while collecting three ground balls. Reese followed with two goals and three ground balls. Steinhart took the loss and posted 17 saves in the full 60 minutes of action.
The Hawks return to action Saturday on South Turf Field against SUNY Geneseo at 1 p.m.
