Syracuse, NY — The State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) announced its women's lacrosse awards Monday with
Kaitlyn Shaw and
Morgan Atwater named as the Offensive and Defensive Player of the week, respectively.
It is the second time Shaw and Atwater swept weekly honors together this season, as the duo was named the Offensive and Defensive selections back on March 4. With the recognition Monday, Shaw collects her fifth weekly conference honor of the season and eighth of her career, while Atwater earns her second. SUNY New Paltz has swept the award for the fifth time this year and has totaled 11 selections overall.
Atwater was all over the field in the Hawks' two wins on the week over Plattsburgh and Fredonia to help her team improve to a perfect 11-0. She picked up a game-high seven ground balls with five draw controls and a game-high five caused turnovers, while also leading her team offensively with a career-high seven goals and one assist in the 18-1 win. Against the Blue Devils, Atwater propelled her team defensively with a game-high in caused turnovers (4) and a team-high in ground balls (4), while adding three goals on the day. In total, she picked up a team-leading 11 ground balls and caused a team-leading nine turnovers.
Shaw's record-setting season continued this past week as she was the offensive catalyst in wins over Plattsburgh and Fredonia as she led SUNY New Paltz in points (13) and goals (12). Face-guarded for most of the game against the Cardinals, Shaw still managed to score three goals and added an assist in an 18-1 rout, while adding three ground balls and one caused turnover. She then made history once again during the Hawks' 18-5 victory over the Blue Devils as the Rye Brook, NY native not only led her team with a game-high nine goals, which tied a career high and the program's single-game goals record that she set herself earlier in the year, but also surpassed 70 points on the season, which broke the single season points mark that was previously set back in 2012. Shaw also tallied a game-high five ground balls with three caused turnovers on the day.
SUNY New Paltz is back in action for two games at home this week, hosting SUNY Potsdam Wednesday at 4 p.m. and Oswego Saturday at 3 p.m. on North Turf Field.
