SUNY New Paltz Field Hockey Opens Up 2024 Season with Dominant 6-1 Win Over St. Lawrence

Rachel Tama records a career-high three goals to lead Hawks in their season opener

Utica, NY — The State University of New York New Paltz opened up its 2024 season in dominating fashion Friday, taking on St. Lawrence University on the campus of Utica College with the Hawks earning a 6-1 win over the Saints.

SUNY New Paltz (1-0 overall) held the advantage in nearly every statistical category, out-shooting St. Lawrence, 23-10, including 14-9 in chances on goal, while generating eight penalty corners to the Saints' five.

Rachel Tama led the way for the Hawks, as she registered her best offensive performance of her collegiate career with a career-high three goals. She got her team on the board early in the game, scoring in the seventh minute to push SUNY New Paltz ahead, 1-0 by period's end.

St. Lawrence tied the game at 1-1 three minutes into the second, but Tama scored what was the eventual game winner nearly 10 minutes later as she found the back of the cage off a corner played in by Miranda Britton. Amanda Quenneville then scored one of her two goals on the afternoon a minute later to bring the lead to 3-1 at the half.

Tama capped her offensive performance in the 41st minute, scoring again off a corner by Britton. Freshman Ashley McGough got in on the action two minutes later, putting a shot on Saints goalie Elizabeth Walsh who made the initial save, but McGough stuck with the play and knocked in the rebound for her first career goal.

Quenneville solidified the five-goal win midway through the fourth quarter, as the Hawks capitalized on another penalty corner. Meghan Gunning played in the set piece to Hannah Ackerman who earned the assist on the Quenneville goal.

Tama led the team with six shots, five of which were on frame. Britton followed with five shots, two on frame with two assists, while Ackerman and Quenneville each had four shots. Gail Comiskey played the full 60 minutes in goal for SUNY New Paltz, totaling eight saves.

SUNY New Paltz is back in action Saturday, facing the hosting Pioneers. The game was originally scheduled for a 4 p.m. but due to weather was moved up to a 1 p.m. start.
