Hoboken, NJ — The Hawks just keep soaring.
In a high scoring Wednesday match, the No. 23 nationally ranked State University of New York New Paltz edged out No. 25 ranked Stevens, 5-4.
The Hawks' second nationally ranked opponent of the season, the Ducks put up an early goal in the first two minutes, but SUNY New Paltz rallied and scored three straight to silence Stevens.
In the sixth minute,
Rachel Tama attempted a shot, but it was denied by the Ducks' goalie. However, not even a minute later,
Hannah Ackerman set up Tama for a second try. Tama struck the ball into the top of the cage, which tied up Stevens' early goal, 1-1.
From the seventh minute mark to the tenth minute, the Hawks were defensive machines, as they denied the Ducks' five shot attempts and three penalty corner opportunities, with
Gail Comiskey having came in clutch with four nearly consecutive saves. And only four minutes after its previous goal, SUNY New Paltz struck again.
Miranda Britton gained a penalty opportunity after subbing into the game, and used it to her advantage. Ackerman received the ball off the corner, and found Britton for the shot which then put the Hawks up against Stevens, 2-1. Ackerman, who assisted two of the Hawks goals already, was next up to score.
After a yellow card was called against the Ducks in the 14th minute, Ackerman stepped up to take the penalty. The graduate student easily netted the opportunity for SUNY New Paltz's third of the match. However, Stevens retaliated and quickly scored with less than thirty seconds left in the first, which ended the quarter with the Hawks only up one, 3-2.
After an actionless three minutes to start the second, SUNY New Paltz broke through the Ducks' defense. Off a corner that Britton earned, Tama assisted the forward on her second goal of the game, which gave the Hawks a solid 4-2 lead over the hosts. Besides a last minute shot by
Meghan Gunning, SUNY New Paltz had a light offensive quarter. Comiskey, however, stayed busy in net as she blocked three shots from Stevens.
In the third quarter, the Ducks netted their next goal in the 37th minute, which chipped away at the Hawks' comfortable lead. However, a mere five minutes later, SUNY New Paltz would re-extend the deficit.
Morgan Woolley got a shot off after Gunning took a penalty corner for the Hawks. Woolley's attempt was unsuccessful in gaining a goal, but it led to the perfect opportunity for
Amanda Quenneville, who buried her opportunity on cage. Woolley earned the assist on the goal, and Quenneville's shot put SUNY New Paltz up 5-3.
In the 53rd minute, Stevens was able to put one more goal in, which cut the Hawks' lead back to only one. Although moving forward, no Ducks player could get a solid look on Comiskey, and the game ended with SUNY New Paltz victorious, 5-4, continuing on in their undefeated season.
Britton led the squad with two goals, followed by Ackerman, Tama, and Quenneville, who scored one a piece. Ackerman tallied two assists, while Tama and Woolley each had one.
Comiskey had a day in cage — and broke personal records while doing it. The junior recorded a new career high, as she registered 11 shots saved on 19 shots faced, topping her previous career high seven saves.
The Hawks travel to face another nationally ranked opponent, No. 16 Bryn Mawr College. The game begins Saturday at 3 p.m.
