Schenectady, NY — The State University of New York New Paltz fell 1-0 to hosting Union College Wednesday night.
The Hawks drop to 1-2 on the season after taking their second straight, 1-0 loss as they came off a home defeat to SUNY Poly Saturday by the same margin.
The game was scoreless through 50-plus minutes Wednesday night before the Garnet Chargers found the back of the net in the 52nd, started on a quick counter. Union goalie Jackson Magee rolled out a pass to his right back who played the ball up field to Alex Borkland, who sent the ball opposite side for a big switch to Alexander Vittal. Vittal took a touch around the Hawks outside back and found himself 1-v-1 with SUNY New Paltz goalie
Christian Micheli with Vittal placing his attempt past Micheli for the score.
The Hawks created several chances within their offensive third in the final 20 minutes of the second half. In the 69th, they earned a throw on their offensive end that was played long into the box, which was flicked on toward goal, but Magee was there to easily pick up the loose ball. SUNY New Paltz generated one of their three corners in the 83rd but was unable to get a look on goal with Union clearing the ball away from the area. The Hawks' final push came in the 89th, as they were able play a ball across the six but again Magee was there to pick up the service in.
SUNY New Paltz out-shot the Garnet Chargers in the game, 15-12, but the hosts had more shots on target (7-3). Union also curated more set pieces in the game, totaling nine corners — eight of which came in the second half.
Alex Wyant,
Colin Brant and
Riley Tait led the Hawks with three shots apiece with Tait having two on frame. Micheli played the full 90 minutes and registered six stops.
SUNY New Paltz is back in action Friday night, taking on Scranton on the road for a 7:30 p.m. kickoff.
