SUNY New Paltz Men's Soccer Falls on the Road to Scranton, 1-0

Scranton, PA — The State University of New York New Paltz went on the road Friday night and faced Scranton and fell, 1-0.

The loss was the third straight for the Hawks, all ending in a 1-0 defeat. SUNY New Paltz out-shot the hosting Royals in the game, 11-9 including holding the advantage in shots on frame, 7-5, but an early first half goal was the ultimate difference in the late-night matchup.

In the 26th minute, a ball played back atop the six-yard box was one-timed past SUNY New Paltz goalie Christian Micheli to create the one-goal difference. Freshman Derek Viebrock got a look in the final seconds of the first half for the Hawks, but the attempt was saved by Scranton's Charlie Smith to hold onto the slight advantage for the hosts.

SUNY New Paltz had opportunities in the second half to find the equalizer, generating numerous set pieces within its offensive half. Samuel Snider had an opportunity on frame following a foul by the Royals, but his attempt was corralled by Smith resulting in a corner. Off the ensuing set piece, Alberto Molina got behind the service but was off target. In the final 10 minutes the Hawks generated three-straight corners, however none resulted in a shot on goal.

Overall, SUNY New Paltz totaled six corners in the game, including four in the second half, while Scranton registered four with two coming in both halves.

Freshmen Brandon Dhanoolal and Viebrock each had two shots on goal off the bench for SUNY New Paltz with Alex Wyant and Molina also tallying two shots in 90 minutes of play, respectively. Micheli earned the start and made three stops with Joe Washington playing the final 45 minutes and recorded one save.

SUNY New Paltz is back in action Wednesday when it returns home to host Vassar College on South Turf Field at 3:30 p.m.
