New Paltz, NY — The State University of New York New Paltz earned a 1-1 result against visiting Oswego Saturday on South Turf Field.
The Hawks (8-2-3 overall, 3-1-1 SUNYAC) hosted the Lakers (2-5-5, 1-2-2) for their annual Heinz Ahlmeyer Jr. Game honoring former veteran and men's soccer alum Heinz Ahlmeyer Jr. with a large crowed in attendance including a multitude of NPMS alumni.
The energy was heightened from the start with SUNY New Paltz holding the advantage in chances, 9-4, including 6-3 in shots on target. However, it was Oswego who got on the board first, capitalizing on one of their two first-half attempts. Stemmed off a defensive breakdown, the Lakers' Cerixey Lindsay found the back of the net to give the visitors the 1-0 lead in the 39th minute.
The Hawks pressed forward and took chances on net with
Bryan Lizama and
Zack Beach each trying on frame with the hosts even garnering a corner in the final minute of the half, but despite the effort they went into halftime trailing by one.
SUNY New Paltz finally found the equalizer in the 77th minute, as
Kieran Weber worked his way through the box before send a cross weak side for
David Lamour who blasted the game-tying goal into the open net for his second of the year to knot the score at 1-1.
Neither team managed the game-winner, but
Colin Brant narrowly ripped a highlight goal as he subbed back in with seven minutes left. The Hawks played a ball over the top for Brant on the wing who used his speed to beat his man and, on the volley, drilled a bullet that at first looked good enough to find the far corner of goal, but sailed wide of frame with the home crowd ready to ignite. However, time expired before the chance occurred resulting in the 1-1 stalemate.
Alex Wyant and Brant led the team offensively with two shots apiece.
Matt Katz earned the win in goal, as he finished with two saves. He, along with
Owen Joyce and
Ryan Bochenski logged a full 90 minutes to help in the defensive effort.
SUNY New Paltz is back in action Wednesday, hosting SUNY Plattsburgh at 4 p.m.
