Oswego, NY — The State University of New York New Paltz went on the road and earned a 0-0 tie against Oswego Saturday at Laker Turf Stadium.
The result pushed the Hawks record to 6-3-3 overall and 2-1-2 in the SUNYAC, while Oswego went to 5-4-3 and 2-1-2 with the two programs sitting fifth and sixth, respectively, in the league standings through three weeks.
The Lakers held the advantage in shots, 16-10, including shots on goal, 10-3 as they controlled the first half out-shooting SUNY New Paltz, 9-4 with six corner kick opportunities. However, the Hawks narrowly took the lead late in the first half off a free kick from
Laney Schmitz just outside the 18-yard box. Schmitz sent an arching ball back post that was initially saved, but the rebound was found by the Hawks who smashed the rebound into the back of the net, but the whistle sounded calling the goal back from a foul on the play.
The chance may have helped SUNY New Paltz's momentum into the second half, as it registered six shots, including one late by
Abby Macleod which resulted in the team's only corner of the final 45 minutes.
Maggie Cameron got behind the service, but the attempt was off target. Oswego fired one last attempt in the waning minutes, but Hawks goalie
Jess Centeri, who had a standout performance in her first game back after missing the last three, made the save.
Centeri was critical in the shutout, totaling 10 saves. She was backed by
Kara Jahrsdoerfer and
Sam Wohlmut, who along with forward
Brooke Kelleher and midfielder
Laney Schmitz logged a full 90 minutes of action. Kelleher, Schmitz,
Mia Baldinger and
Kennedy Jones each tallied a game-high two shots to pace the offensive effort.
SUNY New Paltz is back in action Wednesday, going on the road to face current league-leader SUNY Plattsburgh for a 4 p.m. match in North Country.
