Syracuse, NY — The State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) announced its weekly athlete of the week winners Tuesday with the Hawks sweeping field hockey offensive and defensive honors for the second straight week.
Ashley McGough enjoyed her first ever Offensive Athlete of the Week selection, while
Gail Comiskey was named as the Defensive Athlete of the Week for the second time on the year. The duo joined teammates
Miranda Britton and
Meghan Gunning who swept offensive and defensive honors, respectively, last week.
McGough was the facilitator in a huge 2-1 win over Cortland Saturday. She assisted on both goals, creating chances with her big plays in transition. The first came off a fast-break opportunity, as she quickly found teammate
Rachel Tama for the opening goal. And, what turned into the game-winner goal, McGough was the catalyst as she beat her man to get endline to set up a wide-open
Mattie Betts who put the ball into the back of the net to push the score to 2-1 midway through the third quarter. She finished the day with two shots, both on goal, with two points in the win.
Comiskey, meanwhile, was just as crucial in net for the Hawks. The senior recorded seven saves in the 2-1 win, including five in the second half to help her team hold onto the one-goal victory.
