Buffalo, NY — The State University of New York New Paltz went on the road to face Buffalo State Saturday and earned a 1-1 tie.
The Bengals went into the game at 11-1-2 overall and 4-0-2 in the SUNYAC, sitting second in the conference standings with the Hawks coming off a tough home loss against Plattsburgh Wednesday, which dropped their record down to 8-3-3 and 3-2-1, respectively entering the match.
Buffalo State, ranked No. 3 in Region III in the latest United Soccer Coaches rankings after coming off back-to-back 1-1 ties against No. 13 nationally ranked Cortland and No. 5 regionally ranked Oneonta with the Hawks, ranked No. 6 in Region III, looked to bounce back from just their second conference loss of the season.
The game went scoreless until the 86th minute when
Alex Wyant finished on a pass from
Colin Brant to up his team's lead, 1-0 all but celebrating the upset on the road. However, the Bengals quickly regrouped and scored less than two minutes later in the run of play, as Sam Gregson finished to knot the score, 1-1 which remained until time expired.
Both teams registered 10 shots on the day with the Hawks holding the advantage in the first half, 6-3. However, the Bengals held the advantage in shots on goal in the game, 6-1. SUNY New Paltz, though, earned five corners to Buffalo State's two.
Wyant led the team offensively with three shots, followed by
Ryan Zindler with two.
Matt Katz earned the start in goal and made four stops and was aided by Sameul Snider,
Leo Steiner and
Ryan Bochenski defensively with Wyant and
Riley Tait also registering a full 90 minutes in the midfield.
The Hawks are back in action Wednesday, going on the road to face Oneonta at 3 p.m.
