Oneonta, NY — The State University of New York New Paltz captured a 1-0 road win over rival SUNY Oneonta Wednesday.
The Hawks improved to 9-3-4 overall and 4-2-2 in the SUNYAC, moving up to fourth in the SUNYAC standings with a huge victory over the Red Dragons who dropped to 9-4-3 and 4-2-2, respectively, falling to fifth in the league.
SUNY New Paltz hadn't defeated Oneonta in the last three outings with its last victory coming on the Red Dragons' home turf in 2021. The victory is just the fifth for the Hawks out of 21 matchups dating back to 1989.
SUNY New Paltz was in much need of a win after going 0-1-2 in its last three games and rebounded in a big way after playing the majority of the game a man-down Wednesday. Hawks center back
Ryan Bochenski was hit with a yellow card just four minutes into the matchup and was handed his second yellow four minutes later, forcing SUNY New Paltz to play with 10 men the rest of the way.
The disadvantage didn't hinder the Hawks, however, and in fact, they pushed themselves ahead just five minutes later thanks to captain
Alex Wyant.
David Lamour and
Ryan Zindler were credited with the assist, as Wyant tallied his team-leading seventh of the year in the 13th minute of the match.
SUNY New Paltz hung on from there despite getting out-shot 16-6 in the game, including 9-1 in the second half. However, shots-on-goal were tighter with the Red Dragons tallying four to the Hawks' two in the 90 minutes played. SUNY New Paltz defended set pieces well, as Oneonta garnered 10 including six in the second half to the visitors' three, which all came in the final 45 minutes of action.
Matt Katz picked up the win, totaling three saves.
Colin Brant led the team with two shots with Zindler, Wyant,
Riley Tait and
David Acker each registering one.
Samuel Snider,
Leo Steiner,
Ryan Zindler and Wyant, along with Katz, logged a full 90 minutes of action to aid in the shutout.
SUNY New Paltz is back home Saturday, hosting SUNY Canton in its regular season finale on South Turf Field starting at 1 p.m.
